Il volume “I secoli del Monte” è la prima parte di un lungo viaggio dedicato alla scoperta di “Vicende e protagonisti del Monte dei Paschi di Siena”. Ne è autore Giuliano Catoni, che con piglio narrativo e sulla scorta di un’imponente documentazione archivistica, segue i non rettilinei svolgimenti che portano dal primo Monte Pio che sorge per volontà del Comune nel 1472 fino alla grande crisi del 1929 adottando il metodo di una storiografia di fatti e persone, che mette in luce gli strettissimi nessi tra l’istituto, la comunità senese, l’area di più consueto riferimento, le iniziative granducali, le riforme statutarie successive al conseguimento dell’unita dell’Italia fino alla crisi e ai mutamenti provocati dall’instaurarsi del regime fascista. “I secoli del Monte” ripercorre e sistema in nuova e piana sintesi le acquisizioni fin qui disponibili e indica vie di approfondimento con una chiara esposizione che si rivolge sia agli specialisti sia a un più largo pubblico, consapevole del valore dell’indagine sul passato. Non per trarne improbabili lezioni o utili ammaestramenti, ma per ampliare le conoscenze, rivisitare con spirito critico la bibliografia che si è accumulata (a partire dalla monumentale e imprescindibile opera di Narciso Mengozzi) e capire i fondamenti di lunga durata, etici e collettivi, di realtà spesso genericamente ricordate.
Strettamente collegato a questo primo seguirà un secondo volume – “Il Monte nel Novecento” – di Pier Francesco Asso e Sebastiano Nerozzi. Esso coprirà i decenni che vanno dal 1929 al 1995 e si configurerà preminentemente come una storia dell’evoluzione istituzionale del Monte dei Paschi nel corso del “secolo breve”: una storia “interna”, perciò, concepita per illustrare le modalità della crescita della banca, il suo contributo all’economia toscana e nazionale, le ragioni del suo successo, la sua capacità di rispondere a momenti di criticità e di trasformazione. In essa si evita il rischio spesso ricorrente quando ci si occupa di periodi assai vicini a noi di indulgere a notazioni di carattere cronachistico o personalistico. Il costante obiettivo sarà quello di illuminare situazioni, indirizzi e sviluppi al fine di offrire una ricostruzione complessiva dell’evoluzione dell’istituto.
Curatore editoriale di entrambi i volumi è Roberto Barzanti, che è anche autore di una serie di schede tematiche, di taglio pubblicistico, su momenti e figure che esemplificano l’incisiva presenza del Monte ben oltre i confini di un’attività puramente bancaria: nella committenza artistica, nel sostegno all’istruzione e alla ricerca, negli interventi di natura sociale. Tali inserti si propongono pure di arricchire il volume con un corredo iconografico di prima mano, selezionato appositamente, contestuali al discorso sul Monte. Una storia è fatta di molte storie, e di microstorie che portano in luce condizioni ignorate, tentativi audaci, dure angustie, sollecita solidarietà. Dalla Rocca che fu dei Salimbeni si dipartono fili e s’ascoltano voci che conducono lontano dalle stanze del Palazzo e invitano a collocare il vario atteggiarsi del Monte in un vasto reticolo di progetti e di risultati, che è importante riscoprire nella loro autenticità e nel peso che continuano ad avere nella caratterizzazione di una banca ricca di una storia straordinaria.

The book "The ages of the Mountain" is the first part of a long journey dedicated to the discovery of "Vicissitudes and protagonists of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena". The author Giuliano Cato, who with an air of narrative and on the basis of an impressive archive documents, following the non-rectilinear development which lead from the first Monte Pio rising by the Municipality in 1472 until the great crisis of 1929 by adopting the method of history of people and events, which highlights the very close links between the institution, the community of Siena, the area of ​​more usual reference, the Grand Duke's initiatives, the statutory reforms following the achievement of unity of Italy up to the crisis and to changes caused financially from the fascist regime. "Centuries of Mount" and traces flat synthesis system in new and acquisitions to date are found, and in-depth way with a clear statement that will appeal to both specialists to a wider public aware of the value of the survey on the past. Not unlikely to draw lessons or useful teachings, but to develop the knowledge, revisit critically the literature that has accumulated (from the monumental and essential work of Narciso Mengozzi) and understand the fundamentals of long-term, ethical and collective, of reality often generically remember.
Closely related to this first followed by a second volume - "The Mount in the twentieth century" - Pier Francesco Asso and Sebastian Nerozzi. It will cover the decades ranging from 1929 to 1995 and will configure itself predominantly as a history of the institutional evolution of the Monte dei Paschi during the "short century": an "internal" history, therefore, designed to show how the growth of the bank , its contribution to the economy and national Tuscany, the reasons for its success, its ability to respond to critical situations and processing. In it there is no risk often recurrent when dealing with periods of very close to us to indulge in notations or personalistic character chronicle. Our goal will be to illuminate situations, directions and developments in order to offer a complete reconstruction of the evolution of the institution.
Editorial editor of both volumes is Roberto Barzanti, who is also the author of a series of fact sheets, cutting public law, of moments and figures that illustrate the effective presence of Mount far beyond the borders of a purely banking: the client artistic, in support of education and research in the social welfare measures. These inserts are intended also to enrich the volume with an iconographic firsthand, specially selected, contextual to the discourse on the Mount. A story is made up of many stories, and micro-light conditions that lead ignored, attempts bold, tough straits, it urges solidarity.
