Una stima piuttosto accurata del peso vivo è possibile ottenerla misurando alcuni parametri del cavallo come la circonferenza toracica (in cm) e la lunghezza del tronco (in cm). Il peso (in kg) restituito dal calcolo può avere una percentuale di errore dal 2% al 5% rispetto al peso reale e naturalmente questa percentuale può variare ulteriormente dalla accuratezza delle misurazioni.
