خلاصه ي از داستان رمان:
گتا و دو خواهرش مجبورند بعد از مرگ مادرشان خانه محل زندگيشان را به پسرعموي مادرشان تحويل بدهند. تا اينکه نامه اي از پسر عموي ديگر مادرشان سيلويو که در هندوستان است به دست آنها مي رسد. او از مرگ مادرشان بي خبر است و به او خبر مي دهد که به مقام لردي رسيده است و از او مي خواهد يکي از دخترانش را براي ازدواج با او به هندوستان بفرستد تا بعد از ازدواج بتواند فرمانده يکي از ايالت شود.دو خواهر بزرگتر گتا در آستانه ازدواج با مردان ديگري هستند و گتا که محلي براي زندگي ندارد تمايل خود را به اين ازدواج اعلام ميکند.خواهرانش به او مي گويند حتي اگر در خانه غريبها زندگي کند بهتر از اين است که بخواهد با اين مرد که ملقب به کوه يخ است ازدواج کند…….


صفحه ي اول رمان:
هنگام بازگشت از مراسم تدفين مادرش، گتا با خود مي انديشيد که چه بر سر او و خواهرانش خواهد آمد. آنها تمامي عمر خود را در خانه ي زيبا و مجلل ملکه آن زندگي کرده بودند. خانه اي که پدرشان به هنگام ازدواج خريده و بنا به دلايل خاصي متعهد شده بود که پس از مرگ همسرش آن را به پسر عمويش که آرشيتکت و معمار سرشناس و معروفي بود، واگذار نمايد.
گتا با عصبانيت پرسيد: “پدر چطور توانست چنين کاري کند؟”
هنگامي که وکيل و مشاور حقوقي مادرش آنها را مطلع کرد که پس از پايان مراسم سوگواري بايد خانه را ترک کنند، ضربه ي روحي شديدي به آنها وارد شد.
لينت گفت: “آن روزها پدر از راه فروش کتابهايش درآمد بسيار خوبي داشت. علاوه بر اين بابت سپرده هاي پولي اش سود مناسبي به دست مي آورد.”
مادلن با بي حوصلگي پرسيد: “پس اين همه ثروت به کجا رفت؟”
-“آخرين کتاب پدر هرگز منتشر نشد و سپرده ها هم تقريبا از بين رفت.”
گفتگوهايشان بسيار ملال آور و کسالت بار بود. عليرغم تمامي اين مسائل، آنها ناچار بودند طي مراسم سوگواري ظاهر خويش را حفظ کنند. مادر آنها بانو نانتون زن سر شناس و محترمي بود و احتمالاً تمامي اهالي کانتي در مراسم سوگواري او شرکت مي کردند، گرچه آنها در اين قسمت از ورسسترشاير همسايگان زيادي نداشتند اما اهالي بومي دهکده به احتمال زياد در اين مراسم شرکت مي کردند؛ زيرا بانو نانتون زني مهربان، فهميده و دلسوز بود و اهالي واقعا به او علاقه داشتند.
اهالي دهکده ي ليتل ويک، دهکده ي زادگاه بانو نانتون، تنها کساني نبودند که از محبت و توجه او برخوردار بودند. همه ي کساني که از راههاي دور و نزديک در مراسم سوگواري او شرکت کرده بودند، او را به عنوان فرشته اي که از آسمان براي کمک به آنها نازل شده بود مورد تکريم و احترام قرار مي دادند. هرگاه براي هر يک از آنها يا اعضاي خانواده شان مشکلي پيش مي آمد بلافاصله به بانو نانتون روي مي آوردند و از او تقاضاي کمک مي کردند.
براي گتا مشکل بود بپذيرد مادرش زندگي را بدرود گفته است. مادرش پس از کريسمس دچار سرما خوردگي شديدي شده بود و از گلودرد شکايت مي کرد. اين بيماري او را خانه نشين کرده بود، چيزي که هرگز سابقه نداشت. اما دخترانش متوجه شدت بيماري او نبودند. يک هفته قبل از مرگش او ديگر قادر به ترک بستر نبود.
