The new version has some improvements. It now loads on my sony tablet s where it used to hang. It appears to refresh with new issues and updates. But images cant be resized and text cant be changed or resized.and displays on my tablet as a tight unreadable blob. It may look better on other tablet sizes or resolutions but its crap on mine.

What happened? It no longer works! I only get the spiny wheel of death showing that it's loading... for hours! I used to LOVE reading Harper's articles using my subscription - now there's no way I can even access them! You seriously wanted to destroy this app, Harper's?

W70%
by W####:

Grrr. I'm unable to log in using the same information that works on the website. Also, I was irritated to find that one must download an issue. I like the idea of a download option for off-line reading, but would much prefer to read things within the actual app unless i choose to download. Also, the interface couldn't be less attractive. Harper's, I love you dearly and will always support your print magazine, but if a magazine is to keep up it's relevancy today, it must have at least a mediocre app. Please!

by Y####:

When I first downloaded this app it was functional, then it became progressively worse and worse. Now they are discontinuing its use and want you to just use the mobile website. Why not just go back in the updates when it functioned? Also, in the paper issues they now do things like gluing advertisements to the middle of an article, which tears up the paper, making it impossible to read.

P70%
by P####:

Latest update doesn't let me sign in with my legit credentials. Does anybody test these apps at Harpers? Sad that such an excellent mag can't find decent app designers.

Y70%
by Y####:

I can't use this app as it won't recognise my account.

Does not open

O70%

It won't open.

Y70%

Written by the same lazy developers that did the LRB app, if not the same 'wrapper' app plugging into a different API. Not even a tenth as good as a free app like Instapaper. Looking at the site with a browser is a better user experience. Not only does it not save where you are in the reading, it can't even bring you back if you accidentally rotate the screen. No font control or dark mode. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

W70%
by W####:

The latest version doesn't let me upload newer content than May 31. There are no buttons or menus, other than a help button that tells you to email a non-responsive support department. Completely useless. Come on Harpers, it's not 1850 anymore, this is the future of your magazine. Put a little effort into it.

Y70%
by Y####:

Resets your location in an article if you minimise the app - or even if you accidentally rotate the screen. If you try to email an article to someone using the 'share' functionality, it will produce an email with no subject line, a body saying that you are sharing an article "from bomb weekly", and no URL! The website is much better.

X70%
by X####:

Impossible to view any content when not connected via WiFi or data. Font, colours not adjustable (eg when reading in a dark room). Position in article lost when reopening article, unlocking, or rotating screen. Guess I'll keep carrying around my paper copy.

Y70%
by Y####:

Significant compatibility issues. Doesn't work with latest Nexus 5X. Hopefully they will update soon. When it worked, I wished that they would keep releasing the weekly reviews on time. There's still room for improvement (night mode, adjust text size). Also they're pricing doesn't make sense...it's cheaper to buy a print subscription and log into the app.

Hard to believe this is professionally made. Worthless.

Y70%

This app used to work perfectly...now it is terrible.

Y70%
by Y####:

Great writing worthless app. AVOID.

Y70%
by Y####:

Somewhere EARLY in the description it should say 'subscribers only'.

N70%
by N####:

Don't leave home without it

W70%

Despite having a subscription, I have not been able to access the previous 3 months of Harper's through this app. It is now two weeks since I sent an email request for help, but I have yet to receive a reply.

R70%
by R####:

Can no longer open the app if not connected to wifi. Email to support unanswered. Unable to reduce font size and select black background, white text for reading on phone (need tablet for reasonable reading). Harper's should use kindle or something else like the New Yorker.

R70%
by R####:

I have a print subscription and previous versions of the app worked ok. Now there is no way to sign in. Harpers tech support never responded to queries. Don't put out an app if you can't support it!

R70%
by R####:

Samsung Note 5 w Android 5.x. Had it on my previous HTC and the app was terrible. Log in issues, poor screen utilization, terrible UI. No major issues that I can tell this time.

R70%
by R####:

Renewed my subscription and the app doesn't recognise it. No one responds to emails asking for help. I live in Africa, so this is the only way I can read the magazine. Plenty of people are having this issue. Why isn't someone fixing this?

M70%
by M####:

Impossible to purchase a single issue as the website says is possible. Frankly this is shocking and laughably bad. As the magazine is very poorly circulated outside of big cities this app and the puzzling inability to purchase articles means the already tragically small circulation gets smaller. Is this magazine now just a noblesse oblige vanity project? Welp...that sucks. Other literary and niche publications have managed to adjust over the last 20 years. A real shame only a few college students and city dwellers will read the new Baum piece. From the first paragraph I was graciously provided it looks important.

B70%
by B####:

Doesn't show recent issues or weekly reviews and no way to manually update it. Possibly the worst app I've ever used!

R70%
by R####:

When it worked, it still wasn't great. Whenever I opened an issue, it opened at the beginning rather than where I was last. Sometimes the TOC linked to articles, sometimes not. But it worked. Now, it's stuck at that droll cat image, with the little turning wheel. I'm uninstalling, cleaning cache, rebooting, reinstalling... we'll see.

R70%
by R####:

No longer works. Used to work, now there's no option to sign in, change login, or anything like that. How can Harper's, a magazine with high production values, let this happen?

I70%
by I####:

The website says you can purchase individual issues with the app, but this is not true. It will only let you subscribe.

W70%
by W####:

Don't bother downloading this waste of time. For all the reasons others have mentioned here.

I70%
by I####:

Deleted it, deleted files, multiple times and now it works again updating the current issues.

R70%
by R####:

If you're having issues with the application, Uninstall and delete the Harper's folder on your phone. Then install and log back in.

N70%
by N####:

Makes little to no use of the creative potential of the mobile format. Quite a disappointment.

R70%
by R####:

Fails to load recent issues, even after reinstallation. No option to refresh content

A70%
by A####:

There are no display controls or bookmarks. The content deserves more.

P70%
by P####:

Installed it, but it just hangs. This app is as absurd as some of the ads that have been in the mag recently.

R70%
by R####:

Hangs on opening page, won't let me sign in. Deleted!

R70%
by R####:

Love the magazine, wish they had an an app that works.

F70%
by F####:

Perfect for my commute. Downloaded the entire issue quickly, and it reads just like the print version. I think the bug has been fixed because it was easy to link it to my subscription.

R70%
by R####:

It looks nice and is pretty responsive, but I have a few issues with the app so far. I've been using it for a couple of months. Lately, the icon has disappeared -- I don't know if this is an issue with the way the app is packaged for different devices -- on my old tablet. It has been replaced with a generic android launcher that looks a lot less cool than the 'H' icon. Downloading new issues has also been pretty dicey. I don't have the greatest connections in the world, and my downloads are usually interrupted. But no matter how much had been completed on the previous try, they start over at 0%. This is deeply frustrating. I share some of the other concerns here about configurability and screen orientation, as well.

R70%
by R####:

I subscribed to the print magazine with the understanding that I would also have access to the content online via the android app. Not so! I can access the entire archive from my computer, but the app doesn't recognize my subscription and insists that I pay *AGAIN* for any and all content. Get it fixed please!
