gangl.io combines a familiar user interface with cryptography to create a social network independent of central servers, real-name restrictions, usernames, passwords and everything else you dislike about the status quo of current social networks.

gangl.io allows you to
• Be who you want to be, or be completely anonymous - it’s your choice
• Communicate with friends safely and privately with automatic encryption
• Communicate with the world without the need to login
• Share between users on a local network without the need for an internet connection

gangl.io works by creating a cryptographic identity when you first launch the app. Every message you share (unless anonymous) includes a cryptographic public key representing your identity. This allows anyone else using gangl.io to verify the message is actually from you, and allows others to respond to you privately (using encrypted messages).

When connected to a local WIFI network, gangl.io will search for other users on the network automatically and share public data between them. In this way, gangl.io can be used to share messages and photos virally without a connection to the internet.

When sending a private (encrypted) message to a Friend who’s not on the same WI-FI network, gangl.io leverages Google Drive to store the encrypted data.

gangl.io was inspired by the lack of control with personal data in current social networks, as well as the strong desire for anonymous and/or encrypted forms of communication. Our goal is to provide the ability to share as publicly or privately as one desires without you the user becoming a “product.”

How gangl.io uses Android permissions:

• take pictures and videos - allows the use of the camera during message composition in order to take and attach photos without needing to exit the app

• approximate location (network-based)
precise location(GPS and network-based) - allows you to include your current location when composing a message using GPS and/or network-based location

• modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
test access to protected storage - allows use of file storage for shared photos, as well as for caching commonly used data in order to improve app performance

• add or remove accounts
find accounts on the device
use accounts on the device - allows the selection and use of your Google accounts in order to connect to Google Drive (for sharing some private data with Friends)

• change network connectivity
connect and disconnect from WI-FI

allow WI-FI multicast reception - allows gangl.io to connect to the internet as well as search for other gangl.io users when a WI-FI network is connected
