Chinese Vocab Builder

Chinese Vocab Builder Free App

Rated 4.12/5 (106) —  Free Android application by Timmy Douglas

About Chinese Vocab Builder

Study Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters in a flashcard style format. This version takes words from the HSK lists (PRC's standard proficiency test) and uses the definitions from CC-CEDICT.

Randomly select words or use the word list to jump to a specific word. Optionally change what is displayed on each side of the virtual flash card.

If there is enough interest, I will add additional word lists.

How to start actually? It makes me confused

I bought another android just for this, helped me pass hsk4

It is fully customizable, and this is a must, black interface is a very good idea, it keeps battery use low and helps your eyes to relax and focus on the screen, so I can use this app at bed time without surrounding lights. It could be improved by using tone marks on pinying instead of numbers. The font size in the definitions also should be customizable or make it bigger.

Great app!! Having both the traditional and simplified characters available to study is a big plus.

G70%

It doesnt speak the words to hear the correct pronunciation.

X70%

This is pretty much just a list of vocabulary, which you'd be better off reading from a website. This app would be vastly improved by actually testing the user and giving them feedback on what they have learned and what words they need to practice

I really like the idea of this app but please check the HSK1 level definitions and pinyin. Whilst what is there is strictly correct - its not he HSK1 tones or meanings. I have identified 11 errors, what you have as dai4 (doctor) should be da1 (big); you have di4 (aim / clear) should be de5 (of) ... ni2 (woollen material) should be ne5 (retrospective 'what about' ). As it said, they are strictly correct but not HSK1! It makes it tough for us newbys - help us please (are the other levels correct?)

Q70%
by Q####:

Only complaint is the pinyin. Using numbers to indicate tone instead of the actual tone marking is not useful. So this app is better if you want to learn symbols

X70%
by X####:

Some words have incorrect pinyin. I uninstalled when i saw pinyin with a 5th intonation (there are only 4)

This is an excellent app! A great way to review vocabulary and learn new words. I like it a lot

Q70%
by Q####:

The only thing I would suggest is the ability to flip from viewing the Chinese character (and pinyin) then tapping to view the English translation to the other way around: i.e. view English definition, then tap to view the Chinese. If the app had both modalities it would help with studying

Simple concept but executed well. I enjoy the really large vocabulary and word lists. Meanings can be confusing if you have never seen the word before

U70%

Works well, but just allows you to browse the list of words in a very simple black&white UI. You definitely can find better

Great! Suggestions: keep score/exam mode; font choice; colours; include common compounds with word definitions. Some translations need to be fixed.

Great app for daily commute. One suggestion is to relocate all the user buttons to the bottom of the screen to reduce finger/thumb fatique :)

Works really well, simple interface, highly recommended for beginners. Couple of major issues for others though: 1) Each HSK level should be completely separated, I spend too long looking at words I know. Please please fix this or add an option to remove words from lists. 2) Some pronunciations and definitions are wrongly chosen from the dictionary. Thanks for putting this together!

Homynims, they often choose the obscure definition instead of the useful one.

Does what it says. I'm finding that an app with texts to read gives more context to the words.

U70%
by U####:

A good flash card app to help build my vocab, but some words are wrong. Foe example the character for drink was defined as shout and the character for big was defined as doctor. Still, overall a good useful app.

U70%
by U####:

Well made and highly useful. Easy to choose the difficulty level and information you want on front and back. Why you have a fifth tone, Mandarin only has 4. If you show the tone line instead of writing the tone number I'll give the fifth star. And who is Josephine?

U70%
by U####:

Simple. Functional. This is a great way to review your Chinese on the go. It has plenty of options for customizing it for use with simplified or traditional characters. And the stark presentation of thick white characters on a plain black background make it ideal for use in a bright environment, so you can use it to practise your Chinese word recognition while you're out walking or on the bus. If I have one criticism, it's that the font size for the definitions is microscopic. If you are using it as you move about, it's virtually unreadable. Other than that, I love it.

U70%
by U####:

Great. Note though: meanings are a little off on really basic words but it's just a small side-effect of automation. I'll take the extra vocab any day

This is the exact app I was looking for. Some of the characters are technically correct, but probably not the intended definition: 好,大,呢,会 are wrong.
