About Australian Reptiles and Frogs

Whether you are a keen herper or just have a passing interest in Australia's diverse reptile and amphibian fauna, this field guide will be a useful addition to your mobile device. The data is based on a range of sources include the Atlas of Living Australia, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and contributors to the Gaia Guide (http://www.gaiaguide.info/).

The guide aims to cover all reptiles and frogs that can be found in and around Australia. It covers 982 reptiles and 230 frogs and toads. All species have searchable distribution information. 98 snakes are still missing identification images and colouration data. A large number of lizards (especially the legless ones) are also missing identification images. 91 frogs are also missing identification images and colouration data. The incomplete descriptions are included in the guide to ensure users do not get an inappropriate level of confidence in their specimen IDs because the range of alternatives has been artificially limited.

You can use the app for both identification in the field and the capture and reporting of your own records. If you register on the Gaia Guide website, your records can be uploaded to the server where they are passed on to the CSIRO's Atlas of Living Australia.

Records can be augmented with both photos and sound recordings captured using your device. This evidence is useful in confirming identifications and quality captures can also be included in the descriptions published in later versions of this app.

If you find errors or can improve species descriptions, please consider registering on the website and contributing to the field guide descriptions. Additional photos are particularly welcome.

Sadly a lot of the images are of poor quality. I realize higher resolution images take up more space but I think that's a trade off most of us would be happy to make.

I love the app it's very useful but the only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't have very much reptiles on it or reptile pics and info

Last time I checked geckos were classed as lizards.

e.g. Eastern Water Dragons grow to over 60cm and not 20cm, also the Land Mullet is Australia's largest skink, again at 60cm and this app claims 20cm? Buy a book from a well known own author for correct facts.
