About Courtyard of the gentiles
Historically, the Courtyard of the Gentiles was a special place at the Temple in Jerusalem, whose imposing outer walls opened onto an atrium, or courtyard—a vast area separated by a railing from the sacred place reserved to the Chosen People, dedicated to worship and sacrifice. It was a place that everyone could traverse and remain in, regardless of culture, language or religion. It was open to Jews and non-Jews alike. Here the Jewish rabbis and teachers of the law gathered to listen to people’s questions about God, and to respond to the questions in a respectful and compassionate dialogue. It was a place of meeting, friendship, dialogue and diversity.
The inspiration for this website owes in great measure to such a place. It purposes to be a virtual meeting place of dialogue and encounter, a space of expression, and a window open to the world, for the promotion of intercultural dialogue. It is a wonderful and exciting opportunity for sincere, open, and intelligent conversation, rather than polemics, on a wide range of issues that explore the theme of the common good through politics, economics, religion, ethics, culture, the arts, and society. It is concerned with how Christian faith can inspire the best in human society.
In effect, it amounts to a way for Catholicism to present the best of itself to the human society – the intelligence of the Catholic tradition, its curiosity and openness, and its expertise in human matters. Unlike the original Court of the Gentiles, which was concerned with opening dialogue between believers and non-believers, this initiative explores the relationship between faith and society from a fresh perspective. It will also deliver robust critiques on disturbing public issues within the Nigerian social and political context, serving as a hub for critical discussion on Nigeria’s future.
