Berkisah di daerah pedesaan pada awal abad ke-19, adegan awal novel ini diawali dengan kisah keluarga Bennet. Tuan Bennet dan istrinya memiliki lima anak perempuan yaitu Jane, Elizabeth (Lizzy), Mary, Lydia, dan Kitty. Keluarga ini hidup dengan damai meskipun Nyonya Bennet selalu memikirkan siapa nan akan melamar putri–putrinya.
