Benedek Elek (1859-1929) 1859. szeptember 30-án született, és születésnapjához
igazodik a Népmese Napja, amely szintén szeptember 30-a.

Benedek Elek mindig fontosnak tartotta, hogy magyar népmesét adjanak a gyermekek kezébe, mert a mese a nép
lelkét, örömét, bánatát, mindennapjait tárja a gyermekek elé. A gyermekirodalom művelése számára misszió.
Benedek Elek volt az első író, aki a gyermekirodalom ügyét a magyar művelődéspolitika fontos kérdésének
tartotta, mint országgyűlési képviselő is.
