게이트볼(Gateball)이란?

13세기경 프랑스 남부 농민들이 양치기가 쓰는 끝이 굽은 막대기(크로케)로 공을 쳐서 나무로 만든 문을 통과시키는 파유마유(Paille maille)가 발전하여 크로케(Croquet)가 되었는데, 일본은 제2차 세계대전 후 이 크로케에서 착안하여 게이트볼을 고안해낸 것이다. 중국에서는 먼추[門球]라고 불린다.

게이트볼은 당구와 골프를 조합한 듯하다. 당구공 같은 흰색과 붉은색의 공을 사용하고 자신의 공을 쳐서 다른 2개의 공을 맞히는 것은 당구와 비슷하고, 엄지를 감싸며 스텍을 잡는 방법은 골프채를 쥘 때와 비슷하다.

한국에는 1982년경 일본인 관광객에 의해 첫선을 보였으며 1983년에 한국게이트볼협회 등이 생기면서 보급되었다. 경기장은 가로 20m, 세로 15m의 직사각형으로 규제라인은 경기라인 밖 1m로 설치한다. 팀은 감독 1명, 경기자 5명 이상 7명 이내로 구성되며 경기 전에 공격팀을 결정하고 선(先)공격팀은 적색볼, 후공격팀은 백색볼을 사용한다.

경기의 타순은 볼의 번호순으로 경기시간은 30분이다. 채점방법은 1·2·3게이트 통과시 1점, 골폴 명중시 2점이며 1명이 시간 내 완료하면 5점이 주어진다. 경기시간이 끝났을 경우 선공팀이 플레이를 하고 있을 때는 후 공격팀의 경기자가 종료시키며 어떤 쪽이든 팀 전원이 완료되면 남은 시간에 관계없이 그 팀이 승리한다.
