Globally, nearly 65.3 million people have been displaced by conflict and persecution. Every single day, on every continent, the number of people who are forced to flee their homes is growing at a rapid pace. Never has the need for humanitarian assistance been this great.
Of these, the Syrian refugee crisis is the largest in a quarter of a century. With the brutal Syrian conflict stretching into its fifth year, more than half of the country’s population has been seriously affected and forced to flee. Four million Syrian refugees – more than half are children – have fled to neighbouring countries. 7.6 million more remain internally displaced. Inside Syria, a quarter of the schools have been damaged or used for shelter, and more than half of its hospitals have been destroyed.
Many Syrian refugees flee with nothing more than the clothes on their back. Humanitarian assistance is their only lifeline for survival. But with gaps in humanitarian funding still present, your pledge is critical to helping UNHCR continue its work to ensure Syrian refugees survive and live in safety and dignity.
