About ERG 2016 for Android

PHMSA (U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration)'s 2016 Emergency Response Guidebook provides first responders with a go-to resource to help deal with hazmat accidents during the critical first 30 minutes.

The ERG contains an indexed list of dangerous goods and the associated ID number, the general hazards they pose and recommended safety precautions. For example, if emergency responders arrive at the scene of an overturned tractor trailer displaying a DOT hazmat placard, they would use the guide to identify the material associated with the placard and get guidance on how to respond accordingly.

The 2016 version of the ERG includes general revisions, reorganized general information pages, and the addition of protective distance mapping. Updated every four years, the ERG is available free to public safety agencies in all states and territories through designated state coordinators’ offices. PHMSA has partnered with the National Library of Medicine to provide this free application as well as a version of the ERG in its Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) application.

Page 1 was replaced by a flow chart plus a Table of Contents, and several other changes and additions were made that I haven't found in the 2016 erg app. I have seen an app for $4.99 that I thought was for Androids. Unfortunately, I can't find the app. The $4.99 app would be worth the cost.

However, it does not seem to be all-inclusive: I just found that UN0014, Cartridges for Tools, 1.4S, II does not exist within the app. I wonder why not and which other UN#'s are absent.

by Z####:

We downloaded this app so we can have an on-call with multiple user profiles they switch between. This app crashes and says error, it needs 30MB of space. If I logged in as the device owner it works fine.

"AND EXCELLENT APP FOR YOUR SMART PHONE WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE AND ERG BOOK HANDY. EVERY FIRST RESPONDER WHO HAS GOT A SMART PHONE NEEDS TO INSTALL THIS APP. FIRST RESPONDERS ARE FIREFIGHTERS (PAID & VOLUNTEER), & LAW ENFORCEMENT, & EMT, & PARAMEDICS. AND ALSO ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS A SMART PHONE."

It's not perfect, but will do. Found mistake on Road Trailer ID Chart. Compressed Gas /Tube Trailer..it's labeled 117....pretty sure it should be labeled 137.

Z70%
by Z####:

Very helpful. This app allows me to have the newest ERG version available with me all the time (since I nearly always have my phone with me) without having to carry the actual book with me. In my job, that's very helpful.

Z70%
by Z####:

The app has a faster response time (generally your phone is always at hand) and just as easy to search once you get familiar with it.

Z70%
by Z####:

Successfully installs and opens when searching and referencing guides and TIH pages. Mapping feature closes the app on BB Passport. Still an awesome and invaluable app for responders.

I get to stop carrying the old book! Awesom. So far, app works well. Thank you for this one.

As has been said, very handy to have on your phone, easy to use and great as a quick reference. Great idea for Hazmat drivers.

Z70%

Much easier to use the app than to carry the book.

Tested anhydrous ammonia(1005), large spill, at night... 0.0 initial isolation and 0.0 downwind protective action recommend on the map (chlorine protective actions map worked fine) Information is only as good as it is accurate. Not sure if others have same issue on their phones Would be five stars otherwise... Please fix.

U70%
by U####:

I love to look up the chemical identifier numbers on various vehicles I see while on the road. It's kinda fun to keep track of what I see and look for numbers that are more rare.

U70%
by U####:

This app is a good resource for training and exercises... I don't think I'd use it at an emergency scene, but helpful all the same.

U70%

If you are a driver, dispatcher, Inspection officer, Shipper or receiver of hazardous materials.

I was just browsing the store and I saw this and downloaded it and it is legit

U70%

If you used the book you know it is a pain. This app makes it easy to look up the chemicals and numbers. 5 stars just for making my easy.

D70%
by D####:

Tested anhydrous ammonia and it has glitches on the large spill isolation distances and the ERG is showing 2012 on my home screen. Needs checking on initial isolation charts for chemicals other than that it works fine.

U70%
by U####:

One thing I would like to see is the option of BLEVE in the spill selection area on the map. But it's the only criticism.

A70%
by A####:

I am a railroad employee...since we are required to carry this....in an electronic form is awesome!

Y70%
by Y####:

Actually easier to use than the paper version.

U70%

The mapping worked great! Now maybe a real time auto fill for time of day and weather?!? Really awesome to have the errata at my fingertips!

A a firefighter and emergency medical responder, I sure appreciate having this app when I don't have my paperback version.
