About BARD Mobile

A service of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress

The BARD Mobile app provides access to talking books from the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) site. BARD contains nearly 65,000 talking books, magazines, and braille music scores, with new selections added daily.

With BARD Mobile, you can play talking books and magazines on your Android device.

To use BARD Mobile, you must first be registered with a braille and talking book library in the NLS network of cooperating libraries. If you aren’t registered with a library but believe that you qualify for this service because you have a visual impairment or physical disability that prevents you from reading regular print, locate your local library at www.loc.gov/nls/find.html or call 1-800-NLS-READ to apply for service.

Once you are registered, you may then sign up for a BARD account and receive your BARD user name and password. Download the free BARD Mobile app and sign in with your BARD user name and password to get started. You will only need to do this the first time you use the app. The app contains a user manual that you may access through the Bookshelf feature.

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, administers the braille and talking book program, a free library service available to residents of the United States and its territories and American citizens living abroad whose low vision, blindness, or physical disability makes reading regular print difficult. Through its national network of cooperating libraries, NLS mails digital audio players and audio and braille books and magazines directly to enrollees at no cost. Music scores, instructional, and appreciation materials are available in large-print, braille, and recorded formats. Some materials may also be downloaded online or via Android devices. For more information, visit www.loc.gov/ThatAllMayRead or call 1-888-NLS-READ (1-888-657-7323).

Please please please!!! Is there a way to increase the volume out put level. I do have some small hearing loss. I have to turn up the volume too full on my phone and my tablet. By the way that was on a Samsung S4 , my brand new Moto G phone and my Lenovo tablet. Unfortunately I can still barely hear the book. Other apps that I have. I have no problem hearing what so ever. Other than this problem I love the app it works great. Please try to fix this. Thank you:-D

Works well on my tablet. My only wish is that in a future update or version there would be a way to delete a book once I'm finished listening to it. Android 6.0 security makes it difficult to delete files otherwise. Thanks!

I I initially gave this a polo review because it did not have a sleep timer. Now it does! Also nice that it works with headphones now even though I don't use those. It is really nice to be able to get access to books on my phone instead of using the clunky Library machine. Thanks for the updates!

Awesome app! This is so much easier than ordering talking books through the mail. App is easily accessible and simple to use. The only disadvantage downloaded content is stored locally so if you decide to install this app on another device you have to download the content again...????

This app quit working today. I was trying to look for a new book and it won't let me into the website, and when I go into the wishlist or recently added books it says, "Sorry, no books found!" This crap all started a fiew days ago when I was downloading a book. My guess is the book probably has a virus in it. Any one have any other ideas? I just want this app fixed because I depend on it for some of my books!

Yes, there are still quite a few glitches with this app. Two Problem Issue Workaround Solutions are below. Now, for the moment, you should know: I called and explained the situation and the glitches; although I forgot to mention the volume being too low in a predominate number of the books for the app. The support department appeared very concerned about the problems. I originally have the app one star because of the glitches, but I'm changing it to a four star simply because of my experience with the support deptartment: 1.) Their willingness to listen to problems with the app, because they care, and because I was calm and reasonable too - I believe. 2.) They appear to be willing to tinker around until they determine the glitches are fixed, or that the glitches cannot (my words not theirs) be fixed. 3.) A sound sense of ownership, when I spoke to support, in that they didn't point fingers to someone else or another department for these issues to get fixed . PROBLEM WORKAROUNDS: [First Problem Issue-] The app won't stop forwarding or backing up when pressing and releasing said functions in the app, arrgh!! Problem Issue Workaround Solution - [Step One] Click on the "Play/Stop" function in the app to stop playing whatever it is you're reading. [Step Two] Click on whichever function ("Forward" or "Back") you are wanting to use. [Step Three] Release said function when you reach your desired destination. [Step Four] Click on the "Play/Stop" function in the app to continue playing whatever it is you're reading. [Second Problem Issue-] DRAT! Your SD Card is full, your copies of your BARD Materials to a new larger SD Card, but now the copies of the books and periodicals are showing as being in the app, however they're not playing or the app shows them as unavailable - Grrr, NOW what!? Problem Issue Workaround Solution - [Step One] DON'T Delete anything on the new SD Card, or the old one either. Instead, do these steps [Step Two] Remove the new SD Card from your device. [Step Three] With the BARD app open, click on the three light colored dots in the upper right-hand corner, then click on the "Settings" function, then click on the "Application Reset" function and click that yes you do want to reset and erase the app. Note, if you've created folders to separate your reading materials, this will erase those folders, but as long as the SD Card is not in your device, it will not delete your BARD Reading Materials. [Step Three] Exit out of the BARD and any other apps. [Step Four] Turn off your device, put the new SD Card back into your device. [Step Four] Turn your device back on and open the BARD app. You should now play you BARD Materials as usual.

While I very much appreciate the availability of the app, I would like to be able to move it and the books to my SD card so it doesn't use so much of my interior storage.

It was great for a while then my books wouldn't download right uninstalled and reinstalled now i keep getting the message saying device is not authorized any help please

Be advised you can only authorize 100 books per 30 days. Although the limit does not apply to commercial players such as the vr stream. Shouldn't your phone count as a commercial player since you shelled out big bucks for it? I will not revise or even consider revising until the restriction is removed. I have over 800 books on my hard drive and the space on my microsd card to store them, but can't use them unless I carry a separate player. Here is yet another piece of equipment I have to carry in addition to my phone just to be able to read my nls books. I thought the goal was independence not making things more difficult. O wait, I forgot we're dealing with the government here, so more regulations and control makes sense here apparently. The same restrictions are not enforced, however for other commercially available players. So I have to take the 5 hours out of my day to load my player every time I want to listen to something different! Be warned its not worth your time to download this app unless you like extra trouble. I will revise this review if bard revises their policy. Otherwise, I give it a 1 star and would give it a -5 if that was available! Big waste of time.

Works great, however: A. Been having trouble downloading books within app B. Have to restart app every single time C. It won't delete any books I select to delete. Please have another update so I may update the app. Thanks:p

The worst thing is you cannot search for a title. Only a word in a title. Makes it extremely hard to find the book you're looking for! Especially when you can't see, to sort through the long list.

I like the app as far as being able to play the book but when it comes to searching for a book The Page becomes so so slow and it even freezes up and says that the app is not working.

Okay app. Have problems but when it works, love it. Does not initialized frequently. Takes a live body at talking book library to figure things out. Absolutely have to use ear buds or headphone to hear.

The app works as advertised, however, there is no way to download a zip file to the internal memory through FTP Etc from your computer then elect to open that file in barred itself so that way the program can unzip the file and put it where it needs to go. I can do this in iOS. Why not Android. This is why I'm giving it to the one star.

I love this app. VERY convenient. However, the sound is extremely low. I can hardly hear content if I am out in public, whether in a waiting room or outside on a bench. Anybody else have this issue? Any updates to fix this? Also, it would be great if I could search and sort my wish list.

jump forward and jump back buttons keeps sticking fix this this is extremely annoying and upsetting I like to listen to my book not listen to it running by me and jump like I'm not telling it to jump. Would like to see a new tab added to the site labeled themes

It now has headset controls which are an important part of accessibility, but it tends to forget about the pause/mute button after a few minutes. So that negates its ease of use since the app has to be reloaded to get it to pause, which was the problem with the earlier version.

NOT FOR USE BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC. To use this app you MUST be a registered user of the free reading program through NLS and meet eligibility criteria for the service. This is NOT for use by the general public. This app makes my books more portable and there is no need to call the library to order books and I don't need to return them through the mail. It is real easy to use. Just downloaded to my Galaxy S7 128 GB phone and delete the books when I am done.
