Backitude GPS Location Tracker for Android
New (beta): Send a NMEA GPRMC strings to your OpenGTS tracking system with more options than any other application out there! GPRMC is the recommended minimum specific GPS/TRANSIT Data and this app should be the perfrect OpenGTS client.
Create your own back-end and host your location data. Share it in real-time with friends and family. Here are some other user's examples:

Use Backitude to provide the data!! Run this application and automatically improve your Google+ location accuracy and your Google Location History accuracy and rate!
Find your friends and family members' locations automatically by pinging their phone with a simple text message, and the phone will automatically reply with their location, assuming they have installed and enabled this application.
Continuous location detection application (Configure once, enable, and leave running forever!) with the capability and flexibility to sync location data to any number of destinations including: Custom server URLs, on-board internal memory in form of KML or CSV files, SMS relay, and more!
Detect your location and configure what URL you would like to send it to. Or, store it locally as kml and open using any Mapping software capable of loading kml files.
Backitude can detect locations using GPS, Wi-Fi network locations, and/or cell tower triangulation locations. The location detection and data transmission can occur seamlessly and silently in the background of your device. It allows the user to control the updating frequency and accuracy constraints, and allows you and your friends to locate eachother via SMS.
Offline Storage is available to save location values when a data signal is not present, or you decide to save your data usage and upload in bulk at a future time. Sync can initiate when signal becomes available again, or only once connected to a Wi-Fi network, or by manual startup only.
Minimum accuracy constraints and fall-back options ensure that you are only collecting location data you desire to keep. Polling timeouts ensure that you are not wasting battery life trying to achieve an accurate value when GPS or location signal is not available.
Backitude can run at varying time intervals dependent on Mode which is automatically detected: Docked mode for connected to a power supply, Wi-Fi mode for connected to a Wi-Fi network, or Standard mode in any other situation. Backitude is most efficient when no interval is selected and the application relies on "Push Updates" via SMS and Location "Steals" instead of timed polling. "Steals" are location values that are served up by the OS from other applications, such as if the user opens Google Maps and the OS determines the location, Backitude will identify and utilize the data. "Push Updates" will trigger polling via SMS.
Widgets help change settings or operate location detecton on the fly without opening up the settings menus.
With all the new options for sync'ing your data- Backitude will surely have some bugs to work out. Any problems, please contact me at backitude@gmail.com
If anything else, this is a great app to use as a Lost Phone Tracker. Just enable SMS Push Update with SMS reply, add a secret suffix so not just anyone can find out your location, and let it sit idle until the day when you lose your phone and need a means to track it down, with GPS accuracy.
Great way to protect yourself from dirty cops trying to catch you for crimes you never committed with belated interviews, who else can find an alibi for a date that goes back 6 months

Excellent app!! If developer adds following features, it would be even great, (1)If SMS request received, then app should reply location link via SMS. (2)Automatic turn off location polling for configured time and place . eg if I am at home during night. (Geofencing+timer). Little heuristic!!
This is a great app by its concept. However, I was unable to make it work with my daughter's phone - it receives fire update requests by SMS (confirmed in the log), but never responds back... No idea how to troubleshoot this =(
A little hard to figure out at first, but after that it does the job well.
Great app. Keep up the good work!
Does what it says it should!
Gps
Highly underrated app for ultimate GPS savings. I leave GPS on constantly and this app takes care of the rest so it doesn't drain battery when on WiFi.

Any way to set some response text? Like if some string (such as a hash value) is included in the reponse, then it will count as a valid response? Much like how the response codes work now. Dropbox or gDrive integration would be great (with device name option for KML and CSV). Otherwise this app is perfect! I'm still giving 5 stars regardless.
Does what it should reliably and smoothly. Collects (or steals to save battery) location data, even while offline, and then pushes local cache to custom web service. Configuration is complicated though
Thanks for the update! Good to see development continuing.
...so i installed the latest version of the app to let the developer know that i love his work. However, i have to admit, i don't actually know where and how i'm supposed to be able to review the data being generated. Sorry i'm not sufficiently geek to work it out for myself. No worries, i'm sure it'll become apparent in good time. No, seriously man, thanks for building this thing. Big respeck From the K in London UK
Is this app working? Way too complicated
Super app, the developer does a fine job of support. I created my own web server and database back end which is updated by this app with family member locations. No longer does the wife have to call to see where I'm at, she can just hit our website and she gets a map showing exactly where I am. The developer did a fine job making the app extremely configurable.
To bad Google changed the way latitude works.
I wonder if it's compatible with G+ location sharing?
Good
Thanks for the updates!
Backitude has increased the quality of my Location History data as well as increased the the battery performance so that I don't run out before lunch, instead I still have about 40% charge available at the end of a day at the office. The problem is, Latitude is now being retired, and all of the APIs will go with it. I hope this app finds another host to send data to which will allow us to get data back out through an API, but at the moment I haven't found an alternative.
This was a great app. Sorry about the latitude shutdown. I'll keep the app installed to support the dev as he works on an alternative and can't wait to see what he comes up with. Would pay for a new version if it worked with iPhone too and wasn't as creepy as Life360.
Very useful application. Fun to track where you been and when
I can't get this to poll on the timer effectively. Not sure if it's me, but with the standard poll interval set at 5 minutes it's not calling my web server every 5 minutes. Seems to only wake up when i wake the phone.....
I would like very much to have Google Drive integration. I would suggest the ability to name the files with: configurable name of phone + date_time.kml, and saving files in a Drive's "backitude" folder. Thanks !!
...to keep track of your whereabouts during a day trip for example. Makes it easier to tag photos later on. One request though: please add cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft Onedrive) integration. Oh...and the FAQ doesn't work.
Excellent, customisable app for tracking locations without draining the battery. I was using it previously with the Google Latitude API but it is now just as good with the custom server options. Great work!
Has allowed me to preserve my batteries a little longer while still having the use of gps enabled apps etc.
Awsome
Is it possible to have CSV also save altitude? Dropbox or gDrive integration would be great (with device name option for KML and CSV). Otherwise this app is perfect! I'm still giving 5 stars regardless. Edit: When is the next update due out?
Extremely well designed and flexible app. Only addition I'd request is the ability to publish hourly geocode info to a text or email rather than just a http push.
The app works fine as long as I have an Internet connection. The offline saving feature does not seem to work. Also, the save to CSV feature also stopped working. I've also set the update to run every 15 minutes, but it still updates every 30 minutes, unless I use the phone between and during the updates. Could be an issue with Android 4.4.2.

It makes my latitude actually show my correct location everytime. Latitude is useless for me without this app. Before, it would show, me miles from my actual location. Love it!
But: Being able to save kml AND csv at the same time would be nice.
Update locations to dropbox?
Good

Good tracker. It is very easy to customize the app to use it with free and opensource traccar server via OsmAnd protocol https://www.traccar.org/osmand/ Any plans to update app to support Android 6+ low priority notifications? So backitude icon will be present in notifications list when you open it, but not as notification icon at the top bar.
