About Wikimedia Commons

Join one of the largest photo and multimedia communities in the world! Commons is not only the image repository for Wikipedia, but an independent project that seeks to document the world with photos, videos and recordings.

The Wikimedia Commons app is an open-source app created and maintained by grantees and volunteers of the Wikimedia community to allow the Wikimedia community to contribute content to Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Commons, along with the other Wikimedia projects, is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation is pleased to support community developers by offering the app here, but the Foundation did not create and does not maintain this app. For more information about the app, including its privacy policy, see the information at the bottom of this page. For information about the Wikimedia Foundation, visit us at wikimediafoundation.org.

Features:
- Upload photos to Commons directly from your smartphone
- Categorize your photos to make them easier for other people to find
- Categories are automatically suggested based on photo location data and title
- View nearby missing images - this helps Wikipedia to have images for all articles, and you will discover beautiful places close to you
- View all the contributions you have made to Commons in one gallery

Using the app is easy:
- Install
- Log in to your Wikimedia account (if you don't have an account, create one for free at this step)
- Select 'From Gallery' (or the picture icon)
- Select the picture that you wish to upload to Commons
- Enter a title and description for the picture
- Select the license that you wish to release your picture under
- Enter as many relevant categories as possible
- Press Save

The following guidelines will help you to understand what photos the community is looking for:
✓ Photos that document the world around you - famous people, political events, festivals, monuments, landscapes, natural objects and animals, food, architecture, etc
✓ Photos of notable objects that you find in the Nearby List in the app
✖ Copyrighted pictures
✖ Photos of you or your friends. But if you are documenting an event it doesn't matter if they are in the picture
✖ Photos of poor quality. Make sure the things you are trying to document are visible on the picture

Doesn't do anything. Doesn't allow any editing, cropping of images, moves, navigation, etc. It's just a basic image viewer.

Images upload fine, but I can't (find a way to) affect the copyright permissions or the location of an image - it seems hardwired to locate it where I am when I upload it & to the generic copyright. So I end up uploading with the app, and then editing the image on a browser to sort out the details. Shame.

It works but the interface needs some polish

Specially the search feature should be available and easy to use.

I am a regular user of commons but I faced several problem. it doesn't allow to upload multiple photos, can't read the file name, always ask for it. and after uploading when I browse the photos from desktop I saw an message that it doesn't belong any description but I already add the description.

I can't login to my account for no apparent reason. Also, why is the introduction saying Wikimedia Commons hosts majority of the images on Wikipedia? There are other Wikimedia projects as well. Thanks for missing it again!

It stops working whenever I try to upload a picture. Therefore, the app is useless as it is.

Undoubtedly, Wikimedia Commons Android is a great app. It would have been better if there was a resume option when the data connection fails or stops as a result of poor network. Once the internet connection is lost, It has to be uploaded again. It is time consuming and also data. Please fix it. Thank you.

The app is now more stable and faster. Upload works well and choosing categories is easy. Searching for nearby missing images is a lot of fun.

The software only allows cc-0, cc-by-3.0 and cc-by-sa-3.0 yet there's no option to choose cc 4.0. It needs to be updated to include this option

The app has issues with filenames. It does not ask for a file name. It does not use the file name stored on device. Instead use the title of input form for file name. I discovered the bug when I uploaded several images of Milan. The files uploaded without any errors. When I visited commons with a browser I recognised (I) the app has replaced Milan.png several times. The app should show the file name and alert, suggest rename when overwriting an existing file.
