About Conversations (Jabber / XMPP)

A free and open source Jabber/XMPP client for Android. Easy to use, reliable, battery friendly. With built-in support for images, group chats and e2e encryption.

Design principles
• Be as beautiful and easy to use as possible without sacrificing security or privacy
• Rely on existing, well established protocols
• Do not require a Google Account or specifically Google Cloud Messaging (GCM)
• Require as little permissions as possible

Features
• End-to-end encryption with either OMEMO, OTR or OpenPGP
• Sending and receiving images
• Intuitive UI that follows Android Design guidelines
• Pictures / Avatars for your Contacts
• Syncs with desktop client
• Conferences (with support for bookmarks)
• Address book integration
• Multiple Accounts / unified inbox
• Very low impact on battery life

Conversations makes it very easy to create an account on the conversations.im server. Using that server comes with an annual fee of 8 Euro after a 6 month trial period. However Conversations will work with any other XMPP server as well. A lot of XMPP servers are run by volunteers and are free of charge.

XMPP Features
Conversations works with every XMPP server out there. However XMPP is an extensible protocol. These extensions are standardized as well in so called XEP’s. Conversations supports a couple of those to make the overall user experience better. There is a chance that your current XMPP server does not support these extensions. Therefore to get the most out of Conversations you should consider either switching to an
XMPP server that does or - even better - run your own XMPP server for you and your friends.
These XEPs are - as of now:

• XEP-0065: SOCKS5 Bytestreams (or mod_proxy65). Will be used to transfer files if both parties are behind a firewall (NAT).
• XEP-0163: Personal Eventing Protocol for avatars
• XEP-0191: Blocking command lets you blacklist spammers or block contacts without removing them from your roster.
• XEP-0198: Stream Management allows XMPP to survive small network outages and changes of the underlying TCP connection.
• XEP-0280: Message Carbons which automatically syncs the messages you send to your desktop client and thus allows you to switch seamlessly from your mobile client to your desktop client and back within one conversation.
• XEP-0237: Roster Versioning mainly to save bandwidth on poor mobile connections
• XEP-0313: Message Archive Management synchronize message history with the server. Catch up with messages that were sent while Conversations was offline.
• XEP-0352: Client State Indication lets the server know whether or not Conversations is in the background. Allows the server to save bandwidth by withholding unimportant packages.
• XEP-0363: HTTP File Upload allows you to share files in conferences and with offline contacts. Requires an additional component on your server.

What are users saying about Conversations (Jabber / XMPP)

U70%
by U####:

I like this app. Stable, simple and usable. The only function I need additionally is to manage groups (the dynamic tags). At the moment it is possible only to view them

Z70%
by Z####:

cons: no free stickers Edit: this app needs "rebranding". the current logo and color theme is too Whatsapp-esque. It's like Chinese knockoff of Adodus!

F70%
by F####:

Works with my company's jabber server.. one of few that does. Would love to see a logout button so I can stop killing the app to log out, and more exposed indicators of each person's online status, i.e. on the main screen next to each person's name.

S70%
by S####:

I like the app, it's easy to use

U70%
by U####:

This app is great. It allows you to use your PGP key from OpenKeychain to send and receive messages. To add an extra layer of privacy, you can also send messages through Tor by utilizing Orbot. Would definitely recommend especially for advanced users.

C70%
by C####:

Fantastic XMPP client! Please add notification message content hiding.

O70%
by O####:

Why do you expect me to spend any money for this app. Uninstalled successfully

U70%
by U####:

One of the most unintuitive/awkward and non-flexible (IM) apps I've ever seen! It's a pain to use and navigate. Unfortunately almost all other XMPP apps are abandoned and buggy, and this one supports good subset of XEPs. So I have no choice but to use it for few contacts. I love XMPP but app-wise it's not backed up by good clients, even on PC it's not easy to find the perfect one. Edit (Jul 2017): After the main competitor came to live again, I'm out of here. Too many and frequent problems using this with my Openfire servers where all other clients connect with no fuss always!

C70%
by C####:

Keep getting messages about them charging a year fee and OTR not working properly.

U70%
by U####:

The client itself is OK, however it doesn't follow Google Material Design guidelines and looks like a black sheep among other apps. Lacks lots of features: searching in message archive, per-contact notifications, shared media, etc.

U70%
by U####:

Client has matured a lot over the past year. Can finally be used by my family members.

J70%
by J####:

it's ok!

Best xmpp app ever

U70%

Best android chat app ever. Secure, simple, never had any issues. It just does it's job. Thank you for your efforts, Daniel!

L70%
by L####:

No custom connect port option. Sorry guys, that sucks.

V70%
by V####:

Awesome it does what it says! Simple clean ui

U70%
by U####:

Good jabber chat app with encryption

U70%
by U####:

Eventually the app will refuse to connect reporting, "Bind Failure" force closing the app will allow it to connect again. Using Hip chat's xmpp servers.

H70%
by H####:

Used the open source version before and decided to buy to support the developer! Great messenger, good job!

U70%
by U####:

Please, add fingerprint lock to this app or password lock

U70%
by U####:

The best XMPP client

C70%
by C####:

Effortless. Much better than xabber.

V70%
by V####:

It's a nice Jabber client, but it's not possible to go offline. Once you start it up, you'll have to forcefully quit the process or restart your phone to stop receiving messages. This is a really big oversight, why would you build a chat client that doesn't allow you not to be available.

Y70%
by Y####:

We cannot see the status of other users whether they are online or offline

D70%
by D####:

Fantastic! But please implement online/offline indicators in the contacts view. I prefer not to 'hide offline'.

U70%
by U####:

Good app. I hope this app can keep my privacy.

U70%
by U####:

Best XMPP client, and not only on Android.

U70%
by U####:

This is far better than Xabber

B70%
by B####:

Thumbs up!

U70%
by U####:

I can't believe how little battery this uses. It's so lightweight I wonder if it uses GCM. Fantastic, updated regularly and feature packed. I used to use Xabber (which is excellent itself) but this is just so light on battery usage you forget it's running.

U70%
by U####:

I have to update my rating because I forgot the pwd and it won't work.

C70%
by C####:

One of the best XMPP clients that is still kept up to date

U70%
by U####:

Unable to connect. "Security error"

U70%
by U####:

Not bad. A couple of things I wish I could changes, like remove or reduce avatar to increase room for messages. Also, remove the "Message from Stranger...Block" bar at bottom. It is extremely annoying.

U70%
by U####:

Best mobile Jabber Client app I know. However, I am missing a way to encrypt all conversations with a password like it is possible with Threema or Signal messenger. (Note that encrypting the complete phone is not a solution for me.). I am also missing a way to enter/send emoticons. But it seems like this feature is not going to be implemented in the near future :-(

U70%
by U####:

This is hands down the best xmpp app for android. But note: most of the features depend on the servers, and because it does not require google cloud messaging, it uses quite a bit more battery than the usual messenger app.

U70%
by U####:

Excellent client! I'd love to have Exit button because some jabber services limit no. of clients and I have to force kill Conversations on tablet when I start my laptop or they keep disconnecting and reconnecting. Its not resource issue but server side at jabber.at

U70%
by U####:

Hoping for the ability to have gifs animate while in the message field of view instead of opening it in a separate window. Also, a short video plug in soon would be useful too. Great app so far!

N70%
by N####:

Thanks for the OTR, OpenPGP, OMEMO (Axolotl) support!

U70%
by U####:

Great app
