Learning Chinese is hard, they say, but it is made easy with this method of reading Chinese. Chinese Radicals is a simple program that teaches the user, in an interactive way, the 215 radicals used in Simplified Chinese. It uses advanced spaced repetition techniques to make learning faster and more intuitive.
I think learning Chinese is hard, but only learning to read it, should be a lot simpler. Pronunciation and learning words is just hard for people from completely different languages. However, learning the meaning of the Chinese characters should be relatively simple, especially if you forego how to write them.
Under the hood in will keep a set of 30 or so characters it is working on for you. If you know a radical directly, i.e. by typing it, you get one point. If you do not know the radical at first, you can press the go button without entering anything and you get a multiple choice. If you get the right one here, you get zero points. If you do not get it right you get -1 points. The points are added to your score for this radical. As soon as you have three points, the radical is thrown out of the current active set and replaced with a random new one.

What's Changed
This version now includes Pinyin for all the radicals. You also need to click on a Continue button before moving on to the next radical, giving the user some time to memorize the just-completed radical. Also there are a few animations, which have been added.

Agree with another reviewer here: the author got the pinyin for 手 wrong. With a serious error like that it's impossible to trust the accuracy of the rest of the content.

Agree with another reviewer here: the author got the pinyin for 手 wrong. With a serious error like that it's impossible to trust the accuracy of the rest of the content.

- errors in pinyin: first clue I see is Zhou3 for 'hand' ... should be Shou3 - program should show actual characters that use each radical, to be useful - no point in learning radicals out of context, it's misleading to claim that this app actually teaches Chinese

The app is good, unfortunately, the characters are images, not text, so you cannot copy them to the clipboard, and your score is not saved, so every time you close the app, you'll lose your progress. Also, you cannot review your score to see how many points you have got, which characters you have learnt, etc. The good think is it's free.

Easy to use, small size ideal for phone devices, does exactly what it says on the tin. Would be nice to be able to customise the point system (as a beginner getting 0 every time is a little depressing) - but worth downloading and playing for all!
