About Carpet Calculator
Why Carpet Calculator?
Carpet Calculator is the most advanced carpet installation Android app. It is a true carpet calculator.
Carpet Calculator takes as input the dimensions of any semi-rectangular room, and it returns the most efficient way to lay out the carpet. In addition, Carpet Calculator draws the layout of the pieces and seams required.
You can:
- quickly estimate rooms for carpet installation
- automatically generate a photo of the overhead carpet seam layout
- save jobs
- delete jobs
- calculate cost
- share jobs to facebook, gmail, G+, etc
How It Works:
As a former carpet contractor, I developed this app to think like a contractor. That means that carpet is not a liquid material. It comes in discrete widths, and this must be accounted for. All carpet must be laying the same way, which means that fill pieces cannot be rotated. The 12' width must be divided, and the pieces must be reassembled so the carpet nap is laying down the same way.
The way carpet is estimated is completely based on efficiency of material. This means that you may want to install it differently, to minimize seams.
If you do not want cross-seams, select the "Berber (no cross-seams)" checkbox. Berber carpet has one continuous thread for each tuft running along the length of the carpet. This means a cross-seam would severe the thread, and could result in the unraveling of any of all severed threads for the length of the carpet, in both directions. Hence, Berber carpet installations should not usually contain cross-seams.
Because carpet installers need a little bit of carpet extra in order to cut the carpet just right, at least 1 inch is added to the cuts, in order to ensure that carpet installers have enough to install the carpet comfortably, but not so much that it significantly affects the overall cost to the customer.
Disclosure:
Carpet Calculator cannot substitute for the knowledge and experience of a contractor, and does not help evaluate rooms of complex shape, or connected rooms (no Android app as of now does). But as a former carpet contractor, Carpet Calculator would have been an integral tool to my business. It would have saved me hours of measuring and figuring the minimum material required for installing carpet in any semi-rectangular room. And I believe it will help you, too.
Whether you are a homeowner, a contractor, or a do-it-yourself-er, I hope Carpet Calculator aids in your carpet needs.

Good app, the only thing I would change is to have the option to choose how many T seams for the fill, sometimes it figures for way too many seams....like a patchwork quilt
