About Lumen Privacy Monitor

Lumen (previously called ICSI Haystack) analyzes your app's traffic and reveals how your mobile apps communicate with tracking services and how they collect sensitive personal information such as your phone number or location for advertising, tracking or analytics purposes. Lumen does not require root permissions. With Lumen you can identify traffic leaks even on encrypted traffic.

Lumen is an academic research project led by the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), UC Berkeley and IMDEA Networks to illuminate the mobile ecosystem with real user input. It is sponsored by the NSF (National Science Foundation) and the Data Transparency Lab.

By installing Lumen, you also participate on an academic research project that aims to better understand the mobile app ecosystem. The research team collects anonymized app connection logs for academic research purposes and to promote mobile app transparency (e.g., https://haystack.mobi/panopticon/ )

We invite you to visit our project website www.haystack.mobi for more information and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question or concerns.

Stay tuned for future updates!

REQUESTED PERMISSIONS: To identify personal information leakages, Lumen requires a number of permissions so that it knows what values and information it should search for such as your phone number, your text messages, IMEI and location. Note that we *never* forward your traffic to a remote server for analysis—all your personal data remains on your phone at all times (see further details below)

PLATFORM SUPPORT: Some Android OS vendors modify the normal behavior of the operating system. It may be possible that Haystack does not run in all the Android phones available today. We are aware of this limitation on some Samsung devices shipped with the KNOX SDK. When this occurs, please do contact us so we can improve Lumen on your device. Android 7 has introduced some features that make difficult implementing TLS interception.

PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY OVERHEAD: Lumen intercepts and analyzes your traffic, and so might impact your device performance and battery life depending on your traffic patterns.

It screwed up my mobile..it forced me to install security certificates unknown to me which literally took my mobile in it's control.. uninstalled the app and after disabling those certificates all apps stopped working..only after enabling those security certificates my apps started working..

Thank you for this app. It allows us to see what's happening under the hood and then into the world. Question : When the Monitoring State is On, Aqua mail (my email app) can't get to the Internet via WiFi. I also have TLS monitoring enabled. Anything I can do? In response to the Developer's question : No , I haven't noticed any problems with any other apps.

Not open source? TLS interception? Before you install this stop and think aboutTLS interception. "Those who would trade privacy for security deserve neither" ~ Ben Franklin Nice try . No thanks.

The Apps tab is the only tab I can get any information from. I get 'loading data' from all the others and nothing ever comes up. I am using a Samsung device.

Hey, I've been looking at your website for contact details and I keep getting redirected to your 'Alpha Testing' Google+ group. I have some queries and feedback regarding the user interface and would love to talk to someone at your team. Your twitter page doesn't exist either. :(

I want to understand the need to install CA Root Certificate. Can you please justify why you want to analyze the encrypted traffic? The app asks me to install this cwrtificate of yours to intercept TLS encrypted traffic. I would appreciate if you elaborate the same.

Great app.

App is good for non-technical users. For developers, there are already tools one can use like Android Firewall, etc to track any form of IP traffic, encrypted or not. Or, you can write your own security modules to do the same task. Without the public source codes of this app available for review, I'll be cautious in installing this app for testing. That, or I decompile the app and see what it really is doing behind the scene.

Have to turn off VPN to use any Google app (play store, books, movies, music) This is a WiFi only device, though I'm not certain that's part of the issue. Also, some games won't load with the VPN in use while other games crash the Lumen app. Otherwise getting some interesting - and discouraging - information about my apps. Edit:thanks for the quick reply. Downloading it to my 7S Edge now. (older phone still useful tool for work)

I don't know what I am supposed to do. I have I stalled it. I'm reluctant to allow root monitoring. Please help me understand what I need to do to use this.

interesting idea, i really wanted to check my device for information leakage. there are some UX modifications that would help you. first i think there should be a refresh button or a pull to refresh gesture implemented. and secondly i expected to be able to change tabs by swiping to right and left which was impossible. but good work guys, keep it up. ;)

Great app but would be nice if there was a wiki available so privacy minded, tech impaired users can understand better. VPN stops all traffic on my device... would give 5 star otherwise.

The best way to be aware of what app developer do with your mobile connection

Very nice initiative! The app effectively reports whether other apps are sending private information away. Also, it does not slow the phone in the process.
