Berühmt durch seine Flucht aus den Bleikammern von Venedig reiste Casanova durch halb Europa. Dabei traf er die Herrscher und geistigen Größen seiner Zeit: Er diskutierte mit Päpsten in Rom ebenso, wie mit Katharina der Großen in Moskau oder J. J. Rousseau in Paris. Casanova beschreibt aber auch die soziale "Unterschicht" und ihr wenig glamouröses Leben.

Casanovas Memoiren zählen zur Weltliteratur und sind vor allem berühmt wegen der zahlreichen Abenteuer, über die er freizügig und detailliert berichtet, wie kein anderer Autor vor ihm.
Gesprochen wird das rund 137 Stunden lange Mammutwerk von Alexis Krüger, der auch die Texte redaktionell überarbeitet hat. Regie führte David Fischbach, Gewinner des Deutschen Hörbuchpreises.
