About Speaker Box Designer

Speaker Box Designer is the app for designing the boxes for your loudspeaker drivers. The app will size the box (calculate the box volume to match your driver), calculate the port length (if you want one) and will also plot the frequency response of the finished design.

You can design Closed (Sealed), Ported or 4th Order Bandpass enclosure designs. The sealed design is the simplest to construct, the ported design gives an improved bass response and the 4th Order Bandpass design is great for sub-woofers.

To use the app, enter the details about your driver and the type of box you would like to use. The details about the driver (the Thiele-Small Parameters) can be obtained from the driver’s data sheet, the supplier’s catalogue or from the internet. If you select a Ported or 4th Order Bandpass design, you can also set the port diameter. The app will then calculate the box size for you and you can plot its frequency response.

The app works with both metric and imperial (English) units.

I have been asked by a number of people why the app doesn't calculate the box dimensions from the calculated volume. The reason is that there isn't just one possible solution - in theory you could have any shape box you like. However, to be helpful, I do recommend that your box has the 'Golden Mean Rectangle' proportions of 0.618:1:1.618 as these are considered by many to be the optimum shape for the acoustics (a cube is certainly the worst shape acoustically). You can calculate the INTERNAL box dimensions with the following formulae:

First find the cube root of the desired box volume, we will call this r3V

For Box Volume in cubic inches:
L = r3v * 1.618 (answer is in inches)
W = r3v * 1.0 (answer is in inches)
H = r3v * 0.618 (answer is in inches)

For Box Volume in l:
L = r3v * 0.1618 (answer is in m)
W = r3v * 0.1 (answer is in m)
H = r3v * 0.0618 (answer is in m)
________________________________

If you have a small screen, you may need to scroll down the page to see the calculation results. This program performs a number of calculations including Box Volume, Box Resonant Frequency, Minimum Port diameter and Port Length - these can be seen in the fourth screen shot. Be sure to enter your data correctly, as if you make mistakes, you might incorrectly think that part of the app (such as the ported calculation) is not working correctly.

If you have any problems it is much more productive to email me before leaving a negative comment, as then I can do someting to fix the problem.

Didn't play with bandpass so no clue how that works. But the vented calculator is way off. Tried calculations for several woofers and all were fairly ridiculous. Sorry but a 6.5", 2" long port isn't tuning a 3^ box to hit an f3 of 33hz.

T70%
by T####:

Very close to the tuning and suggested boxes on winisd. Please please make it so you can play with the tuning and you will start getting 5 stars from people! Really id like to give a 3.5 star has potential to be a great app.

Not the best but i only needed to to keep and check some numbers

Q70%
by Q####:

Attempted a 4th order. Told me front was almost 4 cu ft and rear was -50 cu ft (yes negative sized box). Infinity recomends 2.2 cu.ft. front and 1.25 rear. Also told me minimum port size is bigger then the 12" speaker.

Can only design boxes for single drivers

Looks like a decent start for an app, glad to see a bandpass option at least. Disappointed there's no ability to specify box volume and generate response plots accordingly. Also hoped to find support for isobaric groups. May reinstall if those options are added in the future. Also, an "exit" button would be a recommended addition, had to hit the 'back' button a dozen times to get out of the app

This app sucks.

Does not let you design the box. Ported seem broken

Very slick and simple to use

Program says my 18" subwoofer box needs ten 3" ports that are 316 feet long. Go figure......that's what I have to do since this program won't.

App does what it claims. It would be useful if you could change the box volume for a specific driver, to see what it does to the frequency response. Ft3 is the standard for box volume. Need that to be an option. Need more frequency numbers on the graph

X70%
by X####:

Should be called speaker box volume calculator. App tells me for a 10" driver in a ported box my minimum port size is 10.13"dia. Might as well be infinite baffle. Not many android apps available. But there are a great number of free programs online that do a whole lot more. Like actually calculate box volume based on dimensions input. That what a box design program should do.

X70%
by X####:

Only works for sealed box calculations. Vented appears to be broken

V70%

Good program but doesnt tell you box dimensions

K70%

Easy to use. But it doesn't help you build a box. It only shows what Hz it will hit. If it would help you to actually build a box, or if you could enter the width, height, and length of the space you had to build a box to fit in, it would be worth paying for. This app should be called Will My Box Play That Frequency .

THIS APP SHOWS NOTHING OTHER THAN WHAT U TYPE IN. I'D RATHER LOSE A DOLLAR NEXT TIME RATHER THAN SPEND A DOLLAR! 0 STARS!

This is a really useful little desinger app. It helped me design a good sounding speaker for my home studio set up.

L70%

The app does exactly what it claims. There are more elaborate (and expensive) design tools available, but for basic box calculations with the minimum of data needed, this works very well.
