About Write Japanese

Write Japanese teaches you to actually draw the Japanese kanji, hiragana, and katakana. It covers the basic alphabets, and the first 1,000 jyouyou kanji characters. Write Japanese teaches you characters you don't know, reviews your drawing of characters you do know, and dynamically repeats characters you are still learning.

This is an Android exclusive software. It contains no advertisements. Hiragana and the Joyou kanji level 1 are free, while the remaining katakana and jyoyou kanji require a single, one-time in-app purchase to unlock.

Improved character progression! Now new characters from a set will only be shown to you when there are less than 5 characters from the set in 'incorrect' state, and less than 15 in 'reviewing' state.
The new 'Progression Settings' panel lets you alter these numbers, so you can control how many characters from a set you are practicing at a time. Access it from the main menu.

What are users saying about Write Japanese

1 problem - を and お are both in as 'o'. Please change を to 'wo'. Otherwise perfect. The best for learning to write. It makes you produce the letters, gives guidance and extended practice when needed, allows you to create 'story notes' to help remember, and gives you examples vocabulary words once correct. Perfect, ありがとございます

U70%
by U####:

Not a bad app, if a bit bare. It needs to differentiate between お (o) and を(wo/o). Frustrating when you simply have to guess which one they wanted.

This is a good app for learning the stroke order and revising the characters. Some of the grading on strict mode is a little too strict! Fu in Hiragana is traced directly over the top and it still says I'm wrong. I reset because I wanted to go over everything again and it says I know characters I've not revised and the same ones keep showing up even though I have the paid version.

E70%
by E####:

Really helpful, especially the custom sets. I like how you can adjust the grading strictness. Slight quibble: there is currently no way to tell apart じ andぢ, ず andづ, お andを、and the katakana versions of the first two. This could be fixed by using different romanisations, or adding an extra 'clue' when you tap the banner at the top like on the kanji. But overall great app, worth 5 stars and buying the full version.

It is an useful app for citizens.............

Q70%
by Q####:

Thanks for fixing the ni glitch. My next question is: how can I tell "ji" from the other "ji"??! There's no way to know and the program will only accept one answer as correct. Thanks!

U70%
by U####:

The app randomly says it has stopped working even if I have not launched the app in multiple days.

U70%
by U####:

I'm lefty and can't use this trash. I'm obligated to write from a specific side. Also is weird.

U70%
by U####:

This helps me so much... The act of writing the kanji is crucial for my memory. You're a rockstar!

O70%
by O####:

Really helpful for memorizing the characters.

Y70%
by Y####:

Wonderful app, makes learning so easy! I will give five stars if they fix the katakana ni. No matter what I do it's still counted incorrect, and the app repeatedly makes me practice it, getting in the way of me learning the rest. Update: The "ni" katakana was quickly fixed so my review now includes that fifth star. Thank you to the creators of this app for fixing it quickly, especially since I paid some money to get the full version of the app.

U70%
by U####:

This app has generally been great, but a recent update makes it not correctly detect many kanji. If they fix it, this easily deserves 5 stars. If they don't it deserves 3.

U70%
by U####:

Stupid, it can't detect the characters correctly

U70%
by U####:

its a good app, but no matter what i do, it still says that "ni" in katakana is always wrong. i unlocked the full version and i get this? kinda disappointing, but its overall a good app.

I'm a weaboo and this really helps me 'know everything' about Japanese culture

T70%

I don't understand what you're supposed to do?

U70%

The best app, as for me. Considering unlocking the full version

U70%

Grateful to learn languages

U70%

This is the best Japanese writing app I have found so far! I have downloaded so many apps to learn Japanese and this one has been the most effective. You are subconsciously remembering the stroke order and sounds through constant repetition. I learnt the katakana alphabet in 3 WEEKS!

U70%
by U####:

It has already not only improved my Japanese by about 200%, but also my memory is challenged, pushed to the limit, and is improving. This coming from a teen w/ no drive to work on my memory skills.

U70%
by U####:

There are certain characters that I can trace perfectly, in the correct order and be told not quite, try again with no rhyme or reason for that.

U70%
by U####:

I found this app really helpful for me to learn kanji but when I went back over them it was hard to find the one I was looking for when I wanted to revise them and write them on paper.

M70%
by M####:

Tried other methods this by far the best

W70%
by W####:

Excellent tool for learning kanji and preparing for the JLPT tests.

U70%
by U####:

Best up for learning kanji, the fun way :)

U70%
by U####:

I like the app. Have just two concerns. First: what is meant by 'your nth stroke should be exactly below your mth stroke'? I treat it as 'the starting point of your nth stroke should be below the middle of your mth stroke' or as 'the distance between your strokes should be bigger' depending on the kanji... works more or less. But please make it clearer. Second: implement an algorithm to shown new Kanji ordered. Seeing upward of thirty Kanji before the first repetition makes learning inefficient or impossibl

B70%
by B####:

This app is very helpful in learning the stroke order of the symbols, one thing though is that ni in katakana never detects even if I get it perfectly

U70%
by U####:

Would be useful if one could control the maximum number of new kanjis to be learned in a period, for example, include 10 new kanjis in a week...

U70%
by U####:

Fun and addictive

U70%
by U####:

The stroke detection isn't the best and you can actually draw things very different from the real kanji

U70%
by U####:

It would be nice if a spaced repetition system was incorporated. Otherwise it's a fine app.

U70%
by U####:

It's great for learning how to write but it can be really picky which is annoying

U70%
by U####:

I'm in desperate need of a rubber option. If I get distracted and tap my phone or something, it counts it a an extra stroke and it seems the whole kanji wrong.

U70%
by U####:

I cannot describe how fun this app is, draw incredibly rude and hilarious pictures and push play...hours of fun and laughter.

U70%
by U####:

Except that I would like to have the japanese on and kunyomi instead of English words on each kanji. Therefore 4 stars, 5 if you make on and kunyomi possible.

J70%
by J####:

Thank you very much for listening to user's feedback. It is 5 star again.

U70%
by U####:

It only seems to track stroke count, which is fine, except that there's no way to tell it that you explicitly got something wrong. Make that possible, and you'll get 4 stars. Put in some actual analysis that lets it do some of that for you, and you'll get 5.

U70%
by U####:

I like but I kind of goes out of order first is a five then a three then a nine but doing it yourself does help you learn

U70%
by U####:

Really great learning tool for kanji!
