Das Künstlerdorf Worpswede liegt mitten im Teufelsmoor ca. 25 km nordöstlich von Bremen, hat ca. 10.000 Einwohner auf einer Fläche von 7.613 ha. und neben zahlreichen Galerien und Museen, in denen häufig Ausstellungen zu sehen sind, auch viele andere Sehenswürdigkeiten (u.a. den alten Bahnhof, Barkenhoff, Bertelsmann-Haus, Buddha, Haus im Schluh, Käseglocke, Mackensen-Eiche, Mühle, Niedersachsenstein, Vogeler-Büste, Weyerberg) zu bieten.
Im Februar 2010 haben die am Masterplan beteiligten Institutionen den Worpsweder Museumsverbund gegründet, um Worpswede damit zur "kultur-touristischen Premiummarke" zu entwickeln.
Worpswede - staatlich anerkannter Erholungsort - ist das kreative Dorf Deutschlands, in das vor über 100 Jahren die ersten Maler kamen. Die bekannteste Malerin war Paula Modersohn-Becker (100. Todestag war am 20.11.2007), die ihre letzte Ruhestätte auf dem Worpsweder Friedhof in unmittelbarer Nähe der Zionskirche fand.
Ebenso Heinrich Vogeler und Fritz Mackensen brachten dem niedersächsischen Ort Ruhm (der Durchbruch gelang 1895 bei der Bilder-Ausstellung im Münchener Glaspalast) und machten aus einem alten Moordorf ein "Weltdorf der Kunst", das mittlerweile zu einem beliebten Ausflugs- und Erholungsort geworden ist.
Weitere bekannte Künstler (ohne Rangfolge): Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, der Schriftsteller Rainer Maria Rilke, die Bildhauerin Clara Westhoff, Walter Bertelsmann, Udo Peters, Albert Schiestl, Karl Krummacher u.a.
Genannt werden muss auch der Architekt Bernhard Hoetger. Er schuf in Bremen die Böttcherstraße, in der heute das Paula Modersohn-Becker-Museum beheimatet ist. In Worpswede erbaute Hoetger das "Kaffee Worpswede", das im Volksmund auch "Kaffee Verrückt" genannt wird, das Hoetger-Wohnhaus Hinterm Berg und den Niedersachsenstein auf dem Weyerberg.
Zur heutigen Einheitsgemeinde Worpswede gehören die früher eigenständigen Gemeinden Ostersode, Waakhausen, Überhamm, Schlußdorf, Mevenstedt und Hüttenbusch - sollten Sie Worpswede nicht nur für einen Tag besuchen und über Nacht bleiben wollen, so finden Sie in dieser App auch eine Liste der Worpsweder Hotels sowie Ferienhäuser- und wohnungen.
