About Remote Keyboard

SYNOPSIS: Type on your phone, using your PC keyboard.

DESCRIPTION:
Tired of onscreen keyboards? Rather want to type your SMS messages on your desktop keyboard than on your phone? Then Remote Keyboard is the app for you!

Remote Keyboard allows you to connect your desktop computer's keyboard via wlan (can be forwarded over USB via ADB) to your android device and control it comfortably through any telnet client.

FEATURES:
• Copy&Paste text from Droid to PC and vice versa.
• Share text with the app to automatically send it to the client.
• Emoji support through word substitution (requires a Jelly Bean device with the according fonts; Definition lists available on the website).
• Build in ROT13 scrambler.
• Put favorite apps on Speeddial (launch them with the function keys).
• Password protection

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
After installing the Remote Keyboard on your device, you must enable it as an input method. The app will guide you through the process.

On the PC side, you will need a telnet client to make the connection. Telnet comes pre installed on all major operation systems. Windows users (Vista and later), however, need to explicitly enable it via the control panel or (preferably) install a 3rd party telnet client like PuTTY.

Please note that many telnet clients use the US ASCII charset by default. You have to set them to "UTF8" encoding if you want to use non-ASCII characters (e.g. german umlaute, japanese characters, ...)

I am actually using the app to write this review. This amazing piece of software lacks features, customizable key-bindings, or encryption, however it does exactly what it advertises, providing an interface between a physical keyboard and Android device.

this app is great. but lack of documentation. how could i copy/paste from pc to android (vice versa)?

My screen digitizer is broken so this has been an immense help. Thanks a lot!

Good idea, sometimes won't connect and need to try a few times, and notification won't go away sometimes....

Couldn't be simpler. Install, switch to default, telnet, boom. The responsiveness is extremely impressive. Super useful.

Works as advertised , but there is no way to send the HOME key. I use this in a combination with eventghost to send keyboard commands to my android tv box. The only key missing is the home key. Will give 5 stars if added.

Excellent app! Use this when I need to work between my phone and my laptop. This allows me to use one keyboard and avoid the use of the on screen keyboard completely.

R70%
by R####:

it types question marks instead of some "exotic" characters like ű ő ü ö ú ó é á

This application actually works very well. It's nice to transfer my fast typing speed into fast phone typing. Plus I can set my phone up next to my computer and not have to worry about it. I only notice occasional blips of speed whereas the typing doesn't immediately get sent. I don't know if that's a fault of TelNet, the connection, or the app, but it hardly affects performance because it gets sent eventually.

I use this thing all the time while device is tethered. It effectively turns the phone in a cradle on my desktop into a companion computer. I can do various subordinate tasks on the side and not lose prescious main display space. Although I do really, really do wish SSH were a connection method. Bravo!

P70%
by P####:

App runs good, but what is with the penetration. Telnet is without encryption. Is there any way to bring a backup so I can create a ssh connection? If you made this for me and other Unix user you will get the last star and your missing video from me! ;-)

It says Android is listening to 192.168.0.100 and port 2323 .. i dont know how to connect the laptop to mobile using telnet client... i turned on the telnet client on the laptop but im unable to progress further..someone please help me on this..give me exact details on what should i do..

I think you need to be a geek to understand this. Poor explanation of how to set up on PC. After spending 30 mins googleing and figuring it out it now it won't connect to the server anyway.

J70%
by J####:

Yes, it's a rather geeky app and you need to have a telnet client, such as the command line one Windows comes with that you can get in "Turn Windows features on or off", or PuTTY. But once you connect to it, it's very straightforward to use. Just type into the terminal window and your keystrokes appear instantly on the Android device. If you can't figure out telnet, there's another remote keyboard app out there that uses a web interface, but you still need to enter some numbers in a browser to connect. (Or buy a bluetooth keyboard, it's simpler still.) I prefer this one because I like the simplicity of telnet and like the "send to PC" button at the bottom right of the phone screen, to send whatever's in the text box to the PC. It's a great way to get URLs out to a PC (or send a bunch of text up to be processed with a regex and then pasted back to the phone) while you're using Remote Keyboard. Manual ROT-13 encryption is a strange feature to include, but alright I guess. I'd really prefer if there were an option to have real encryption, either with telnet over SSL (if the user can puzzle out how to create such a connection), or even better, SSH.

by D####:

A little bit confusing for a newbie, but hey.. there is nothing that google cannot solve. infact. I'm typing this through this app. right now. Loving it so much

R70%
by R####:

It works great. But when I run the app on my device it displays the IP as 0.0.0.0:2323 which is wrong. I have to manually do a network scan to find the host. Using my phone's hotspot.

P70%
by P####:

The only thing needed is.... a user forum (or Q&A forum). I've seen people ask questions on how to use this great little app.

V70%
by V####:

This is perfect for what it is. Difficult to use unless you are familiar with talent already. SSH instead of telnet would be a nice option. Not a huge fan of un-encrypted traffic.

C70%
by C####:

Works perfectly, and sets up in a flash. Where's the SSH option though? Telnet+ROT13 is as secure as this app gets.

K70%
by K####:

But is there a way to also input a "tap"/click on the screen? Position defined or at origin could work, maybe one of the f-keys could have a shortcut for that?

K70%
by K####:

Stop your fat fingers from typing misspelled words. Stop spending your days chasing letters on the touch screen keyboard. Stop wandering about with your index sticking out, use your 9 fingers with your touch-typing skills. Use this App you MUST!

K70%
by K####:

The app works flawlessly with the PC keyboard. But there should be some necessary upgrades like the option to select, cut, copy, paste using the PC keyboard. And another important thing how to use emojis when on the PC keyboard, its necessary for texting apps.

M70%
by M####:

Man this application is so cool! some times urging that it's my real TVs remote! Lol! 5 Stars!

K70%
by K####:

Simple to use and works great mostly. My main annoyance is that you can't turn off the notification even when the app is closed. So the service is likely always running which i don't want. Fix this or point out what I'm doing wrong and 5 stars

K70%
by K####:

Great piece of software, but wish I knew how to send text using the enter key without creating a new line.

K70%
by K####:

Can anyone help me use this? I do not understand. I have it setup via usb and adb and have been entering the command to connect in a terminal, but NOTHING happens after that. What command do I enter after adb forward tcp:2323 tcp:2323 . I'm on ubuntu.

X70%
by X####:

Absolutely indispensable app to save hours of Your life! Simple, but impossible to live without once you try it. You missed one HUGE improvement though. The app is small so the best way to implement it is to let it sit in the background and switch the remote keyboard on when it receives a TELNET connection on port 2323. This way I could just telnet in and start typing instead of having to open the app and select the remote keyboard.
