About ARCHÄOLOGISCHES LANDESMUSEUM
This is the official app for the Baden-Württemberg State Archaeological Museum in Constance with the audio guide and all the information on the Special Exhibition “A Guest of the Jews – Jewish Life in Medieval Cities” (Apr. 8th, 2017 – Oct. 29th, 2017).
About the exhibition:
This Special Exhibition presents the joint cultural heritage of Jews and Christians in the greater Lake Constance region as a part of the “Year of Religions” commemorations celebrating the 600th anniversary in 2017 of the Council of Constance. The exhibition’s aim is to anchor the Jewish aspect of these cultures both in the cultural history of the greater Lake Constance region as well as in the history of the Jews in Europe. To achieve this, the research conducted on the topic was assembled and the few remnants of this Jewish heritage, spread all around the world, were collected. Many of these rare relics and documents have been inadequately researched up to now. Working together with students from the University of Constance, Dr. Dorothea Weltecke, Professor of the History of Religions at the university, closely examined and researched these artefacts. She and her team are now presenting their findings for the very first time.
Visitors will find the pictorial world of the Jews in the Lake Constance area to be a particularly outstanding testimony to this region’s Jewish medieval culture. In the past, pictorial sources have chiefly been used to understand the discriminatory image that was held toward Jews. Only in recent years, pictures and illustrations commissioned by Jews have come to be recognised and appreciated. This perspective is presented here for the first time in an exhibition.
The exhibition is bilingual in both German and English.
About the museum:
Stone Age stilt houses, Roman city life, the graves of Alemanni nobility, draughty castle life and the dreary Middle Ages, all cast in a new light lovingly prepared for you to illustrate the vitality and excitement of the past. Take a stroll through history from the 6th millennium BCE through the 19th century CE.
Our completely redesigned “The World of Stilt Houses” exhibition features spectacular finds from three millennia of stilted house history, and provides a fascinating overview of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Lake Constance region.
You can also carry on enjoying Roman city life with a stroll along ancient theatre steps, wondering at the grandiose commemorative objects found in Alemanni graves or marvelling at the imposing menhir from Baden-Württemberg, now more than 3,500 years old.
Perhaps you want to take a journey back into ancient Roman times. Your tour starts out in the museum and then continues in the pyramid tower before Konstanz Minster, where you can find out everything about the Roman Castle of Constance.
