About DSLR Remote

Your smartphone is always with you, so why carry unnecessary stuff? Let your smartphone in combination with DSLR Remote be a remote control, a timer or a HDR controller for your digital reflex camera.

Whether via infrared, by wire or via Bluetooth, DSLR Remote enables you to take timer controlled exposure series (e.g. for time lapse), long time exposures or exposure sequences in the context of High Dynamik Range photography. If you are not using a device with a supported built-in IR sender (see below) all you need is a small, inexpensive and easy to build hardware, which is then connected to the ear phone jack of your smartphone (and a commercially available Bluetooth stereo headset if you want remote control via Bluetooth). You will find detailed instructions on how to build the required hardware on the authors website (http://bitshift.bplaced.net).

Possible functions (among others) are:
1. Simple Remote control
2. Delayed Shots
3. Series of shots with fixed interval (e.g for time lapse)
4. Bulb exposures
5. Combinations from 2., 3. and 4.
6. High-Dynamic-Range-Sequences (HDR)
7. Time controlled HDR-Sequences (Combination of Timer and HDR)
8. Triggering of shots or start of Timer or HDR sequences by the ambient light sensor on your smartphone (keyword: light barrier)
9. Triggering of shots or start of Timer or HDR sequences by the internal or an external microphone

In various models Canon seems to limit the precision of the bulb mode to one second. So HDR exposures below 1 second and/or with a fraction of a second (as 1.5 sec) are rounded to the full second. DSLR Remote can't do anything about that! Reported models so far: 400D, 500D, 550D, 5D II.

Using a built-in IR sender:
DSLR Remote should work with the built-in IR sender of the followig devices (don't forget to choose the right camera brand and to switch your camera into remote mode):
Samsung
- All Samsung devices with built-in IR sender
There seems to be a bug in some/all Samsung devices: in power saving mode the IR blaster doesn't work correctly! So, make sure to switch your device into normal (non-power saving) mode before using DSLR Remote.
HTC
- All HTC devices with built-in IR sender
LG
For a list of supported devices please see:
http://qa.mobile.developer.lge.com/develop/dev-guides/lg-qremote-guide/introduction/lg-qremote-sdk/#SupportedDevices
Sony
Unfortunately, doesn't the Sony native IR API provide the feature needed by any remote app like DSLR Remote, as is deploying its own IR codes as data with the app. The only thing possible in the API is using codes learned from physical remotes or codes supplied with the phone/tablet. Please use a IR dongle or cable release hardware as described on the DSLR Remote website.
Huawei
Unfortunately, Huawai didn't implement the Android Kitkat IR API on their devices. And there is no official IR SDK from Huawai available. Please use a IR dongle or cable release hardware as described on the DSLR Remote website.
Other Brands
With integration of the Android 4.4.2 (Kitkat) IR API DSLR Remote should work with all devices with a built-in IR Blaster supported by the Kitkat IR API.

Using DSLR Remote hardware:
Caution: a few smartphone types do not output high enough volume on their ear phone jack to make the infrared harware work properly. In addition a few camera types (e.g. Canon EOS 550D) are still not properly controlled remotely via the infrared receiver. In that case you might want to choose the cable control (transistors) instead.

Supported camera brands when using as an infrared remote:
Canon, Fuji, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony

I have a Samsung S6 and have trued quite a few DSLR remotes using the IR blaster. This by far is the best i have found, both in terms of features and usability. It is also light on resources which is great. Just one thing on the wishlist: the app doesn't support windowed mode. With nougat supporting multiple screens, adding the windowed mode would make life better. One browse through music or surf the internet while the camera does its job

I just installed DSLR Remote onto my Galaxy S4 and initial tests with the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 are positive. I mostly plan on using this when the camera is mounted on a tripod and I am taking multiple long exposures in the night sky. Tested using the 'delay', 'interval' greater then my shutter speed, and 'shots' for multiple exposures under timer and works great. Tried two other products before finding this and they either didn't work at all, or weren't consistent. So looking forward to trying this out in the field

looks like nice app... but my nikon p900 dont seem to work with it using a Samsung s5. with internal ir. Edit: yes i did all my phone did was flash the led but Camera did not respond to anything from it it was all so right up near the camera's ir as well so not sure why it did not work. the firmware the camera has is "Coolpix p900 ver. 1.3 if that helps.

Good App. I tried with my D3300 Nikon using infrared. Working well But I did not understand HDR feature. When I tried it, it took the pictures in a sequence but the Exposure Values were not changed when taking pictures. is it possible only in cable mode? Some instructions on it will be helpful

Works perfectly on my s5 controlling my cannon t3i. One thing though. It has a night mode where it turns the app red which is great! But it still leaves the titlebar bright blue which defeats the purpose of the night view. Wish it also made that red so as not to ruin night photography.

Downloaded app to use as a remote trigger for photography but isn't connecting to camera. Made sure to turn off power saving mode on Note like app description said. App opens, I press remote and it shows a "s" button on the screen but does nothing. Camera set to remote. Not sure what's wrong... disappointed... seems to work for others.

Without instruction on how to make your app work I quickly move on to the next app. I just dont have time to try to learn an app if the developor doesnt have time to write up instructions or make an app that can function without needing instructions. I had high hopes... let me know when you write instructions... thx!!

When I discovered that my current phone has got an IR port again, I had to try this app - works just great for my Pentax. That's one less extra remote to carry around now.

Loved this app on my gs4 and gs5. Switched to an lg g4 and can't seem to get it to work. When opening program I see notification: VS986 - QuickSetSDK is not installed. Ideas?

I really like the time lapse feature. It is so difficult to find an intervalometer for Sony nex5 and I had this app for a while but didn't know how to use it. Today I fooled around with it and wow,I am impressed. Thanks for a great app. BTW, I use a Samsung s5.

I dont know why it doesnt work with my canon650d and samsung note 4. i choosed brand canon and ir but doest work. !!!

I don't write many reviews, but this app is so simple, does what is says it does so well and has no annoying ads that I feel that it deserves it. If your phone has an IR transmitter and you have one of the supported cameras, this is a must-have app (I have no experience with th cabled solutions). Highly recommended!

I came to smoky mountains to shoot the milkyway galaxy as I write this review. I forgot my remote and for long exposures and timelapse remote is a must. Luckily found this app and able to use it since. Easy to setup and loved it.

Use to work fine with my Nikon D5200 and Samsung galaxy S4. Sonce I switched to S6 edge, it's not working anymore. Disheartened, used to love the app :/

Works great with my Samsung S4 mini and my Nikon D750 - a perfect replacement for that infrared remote control Nikon sells separately. Like that Nikon remote, it doesn't do much - it just acts as another release button (i.e., focus and shoot) that I don't need to touch the camera for (i.e. reduce camera shake). Just make sure to enable "IR remote mode" in the camera's "shooting" menu.

Used a small Nokia BT audio device coupled to Galaxy Tab 3 and 'cable A' using optoisolators works well with my Canon 550D but not with my 400D (in bulb mode with the 400D the shutter opens and closes every second or 2). I dare say the transistor cable version will work with the 400D but I didn't try since the 550D is the one I needed it to work with :-) Very excellent app. Thanks for making it and detailing the cables.

Samsung Note 3 (built in IR) with Canon 5DMark3. It was set up in 30 sec - only selected the camera brand within the app and put the camera in self timer / remote mode! Works like a charm and it even offers time laps / intervalometer functionality without having to push the shutter release all the time! Solved a big problem for me! Graphic design is minimalistic and simple to use and functionality is fantastic!!! Great work guys!

Works fine with my D610 and Galaxy S4. Whilst the UI is a little lack luster this gets the job done. With line of sight I got a couple of meters away without a problem (probably could have got further but I was indoors). A handy little app for when I don't have my remote handy.

Tried couple of remote dslr apps and this one is the best of them. It is rare to find such useful and good app. Simple to use yet able to yield complex results in photography. I believe this to be the most useful app Ive ever used.

The app works very well with my galaxy s4 and 700d canon. It will become a perfect app if vibration option is available so i can know when the infrared signal has been fired out. I am looing forward to see this update

Lost my remote a few weeks ago and haven't gotten around to buying a new one. That's when I decided to Google camera apps and I'm really glad I did. This app works extremely well on my d7100. Very easy to set up and also has what I believe to be a longer range than my original remote. I also think it is more consistent. Also you don't have to worry about buying those stupid little round batteries that don't seem to last long. Every time I went for my remote the battery was always dead. Great app thanks!!!

I like the app but I am having a hard time setting it up for my cannon reble xs. It fires but it won't stop shooting photos

I have an LG g2 with a built in IR blaster and nikon d600. I know the IR on the phone works fine because I use the remote function all of the time. My d600 has no issues and I've set the camera to the remote setting. I've also set the app to nikon. No luck

Funciona perfectamente co meu LG-G2 (con infravermello de fábrica) e a Nikon D90. Works perfectly with my LG-G2 (Built in infrared) and Nikon D90

The fact that the screen has to stay on means risks of image burn on the display, either a screen saver mode or the ability to run with the screen off would be great or if the screen would just fade to black would work also, reducing the brightness helps, but I would like to run the app for several hours. I'm just fearful for my screen.

Finally after looking for a while... You need to turn on the quick IR Remote option from the shooting menu and there... Notice your phone should have IR built in to work!

Worked perfectly with HTC One M8 & M9+ mobile phones using Android 6 and Nikon D3200. Single shot, Timer mode and Time lapse all work great with or without flash. Simple to use and the best part it's FREE. Well done to the developer... Saved my skin on many occasions when I forgot the Nikon remote...

Was it a coincedence that the app knew what brand of dslr camera I have? Otherwise, how did it know?

K70%

Simple, clean and functional app. Easy to use and works great with the smartphone and camera I use. If your phone has an integrated IR blaster it's a simple matter of downloading and setting your camera brand in the settings (supports all the major camera manufacturers).
