About SimpleNews - Feed Reader

Update - new version available: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.dala.simplenews.smarties

"Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler." - Albert Einstein
There are far more powerful readers available on the market. But who seriously needs all the provided features of current popular RSS-Readers? And why do they all need so many different permissions?

When I read news I don't want to have 400 different functions blocking my screen and hiding the most important thing: News.

SimpleNews gives you access to your favorite news feeds. As the only additional feature it allows you to add/modify categories and feeds to fulfill your interests.

Simple News is simple. modern. intuitive. smart.

When I first opened the app, I went in and deleted all the default categories. I then created a new one, called Comics, and added (after several tries) SMBC. This added two entries, duplicates of each other, and when I deleted one the other disappeared as well. Re-added (again, two), and restarted the app. Now Comics is gone and Sports is back! I'm definitely willing to overlook bugs in a new product, but right now these are game-breaking. Also more feedback, but text-limited. :(

Simple is as simple does! This app gives you news (in fact any RSS source) without all the bling distractions that would bog down your phone, clutter your screen, and eat bandwidth. So, no pictures. Looks clean and fresh. Easy to choose your own feeds, and organise into tabbed topics. Headlines are shown (with short text one tap away) and then you can click through to the original source. Perfect execution.

I really like this app, Slick feed appearance. And love the font size.My only real issue that is actually preventing me from using this app is lack of URL support - ²/³ of my feeds are told they're invalid. If you can fix this, I'm in 5 stars all the way.

Just what you need and nothing you don't. I would suggest implementing copy/paste support when adding RSS addresses.

I like this app. However, there is more to be done. Customization to be able to select the news sources and news categories. It would be nice if the news page would open in the same app rather than switching between the app and a different browser.

No option for fonts. Filled with all crap feeds. No thumbnails in list view.

S70%

This is not simple. Feed reader is already bloated with CNN, ABC and CBS. All these three sources in all categories. You have to edit/delete all of them to make the feed reader yours. Also when you go to categories, then to edit any of them, now if you go back it'll take to articles and not to categories again. It's like going 0 > 1 > 2 > 3 and when you push back app takes you to 0 instead of 2.

Quick and great UI, its simple yet pleasing to eyes

I wish this was better. Often all the news in a category is culled from one source. Too often the links are dead.

Froze and crashed phone entirely, could only reboot and uninstall it

I love the layout and simplicity and that I can add custom feeds. Minor issues with dead standard feeds I can't remove. Major issue that it sometimes can't find my browser.

B70%
by B####:

This app has semi frozen my phone, all I have is a black screen. If I can get to the uninstall page this crap is going byebye

S70%
by S####:

I LOVE the UI. I like the ability to edit channels. The feed reader also loads quickly. The one thing that I would like to have is a "smart reader" that opens the story with text only, similar to what they have done with SmartNews. I always find it annoying to open the story in my browser. It takes an eternity. If you do this, then I will give you 5 stars.

Does it's job (only failure is The Register's feed) and doesn't demand access to all my info. Best RSS app & respects my privacy...cannot ask for more. Great job guys.

I70%

Can't add external RSS feeds, keeps giving me sports category even tho its been deleted. This app isn't an RSS aggregator, it's just a lame front end to their news sites. Don't bother

S70%
by S####:

Cannot really setup RSS feeds

S70%

Nice, but too many repeats & not enough topics. Needs more variety.

S70%

useless reader

S70%

Used to love this app, but recently it has become unusable. It freezes all the time to the extent that the "stopped responding" box keeps popping up, sometimes after merely scrolling down a screen. Worth keeping an eye on though - When it worked it was very good indeed.

S70%
by S####:

Downloaded quite a few readers and this is the only one which hasn't annoyed me in some way yet.

S70%
by S####:

Most of the big name readers out there tie you in with adds or don't allow you to customise, this light weight app let me set up custom groupings and feeds without too much hassle. Its cool simple design is a joy to use. One improvement would be pop up hints for newbies that would save time trying to work out how to use it - but keep it light - no more functionality needed.

Trouble adding feeds, can't see how to record what's been read, confused by update, have no idea what the thing in the corner is all about. in reply to reply, hopefully more helpful detail; 1. needing to fire off to a browser to be counted as read is no use if a feed has 100+ items a day. 2. updating the feed when you scroll to top, adds new items and so means you loose where you are up too. 3. no instructions 4. recent items? is that recently downloaded/read or viewed? and how long? 5. link type added feeds, through OS, mostly not working, thay are actually there, but it says 'no feeds', with no error or help 6. a feeds url, is called its name. 7. never would have used an envelope for unread, for me that means email or at-a-stretch sms and a flame for recent, why? how about an eyeball with line though and a clock face. 8. you go throgh categories to add feeds, no that should be only category stuff. 9. "updating news" message, i needed a category called news, (not all feeds are news), so now it looks like its updating just that, why not simply call it "updating feeds"?

U70%
by U####:

lets me choose specific news sources I like, while BLOCKING certain other news sources like the "Wall Street Journal," and "New York Times," content providers who stupidly set monthy-read limits on users while constantly pushing thier pay-per-view headlines into my space-limited news feed. I can't stand that sort of marketing snobbery, those kinds of so-called "news sources" are rife with useless, utterly biased journalism, so why can't I block their feeds on this app?! For 5 STARS, please add that feature.

I was getting annoyed at the bloat of some other readers. This one is simple and generally works well. Only problem I have is that I added a few feeds that are not displaying articles.
