About AndroFlight
AndroFlight provides support for hang glider pilots during the flight. Map and flight instrument display can be configured in order to provide the right information to the pilot depending on the current phase of the flight. Airspaces will be displayed on the map and textual/acoustic warnings will let you know if you approach/enter an airspace. Airspaces are also displayed during flight planning when Routes are created to be used for navigation during flight. Like traditional flight vario devices AndroFlight provides an acoustic variometer on Android devices with pressure sensor but can also use an external Bluetooth variometer like XC-Tracer. Going beyond these devices AndroFlight makes use of information available online, e.g in order to display height. Because there is not always a data connection available, the required data (e.g. maps) can be downloaded to the SD card before. This offline use is currently (for legal reasons) only available using maps provided by the OpenStreetMap project but online AndroFlight can use maps provided by Google as well. In order to let the pilot focus on the flight AndroFlight features an automatic take-off and landing detection. Once an event like take-off or landing has been detected a configurable message (SMS, Email) may be sent which containing date, time, location, Maps link. During the flight AndroFlight can transmit its location in real-time in order to let friends & family know where you are. After landing AndroFlight creates an IGC file of the flight. It is valid for participation in online contests (DHV XC, XCC, XContext, XC League) since AndroFlight has been approved by FAI. Glider type, registration number and passenger name used for the IGC file is taken from the selected flight configuration of the various you may define. AndroFlight takes care of the IGC file upload to a Leonardo flight database (paraglidingforum, DHV XC). The IGC file - but any other IGC file as well - can be played by AndroFlight. During play the map and flight instrument display show exactly the same information as during the flight recorded in this IGC file. It can be used to analyze flight situations or simply to experience a flight (again).
More information, documentation, issue tracking and road map can be found on the project website. It also contains information about fixing a smartphone on a paraglider cockpit as well as using an external battery (chapter "Hands-on tips")
