Port and Shipping Terminology

For many years now Livorno Port Authority, through its Vocational Training Centre, has dedicated part of its activity to programming, designing and carrying out technical English training programs to support operators in the port-maritime sector in acquiring specialist language skills.
This experience, together with the experience gained in transnational projects, led to considering the opportunity of developing a basic English glossary of specific sector terminology for workers both during training activities and in the professional context.
To facilitate using this volume while at work, it has been designed so that it can be consulted on mobile phones, in order to be able to listen to the pronunciation of specific terms.
A particular characteristic of this glossary is that it contains a self-testing section for monitoring the language skill level you have acquired.
This volume represents an initial collection of technical terms used most frequently in the port sector. Livorno Port Authority’s intention is, in the future, to produce a series of specific glossaries dedicated to the terminology most commonly found in the port at operational, technical, administrative and managerial levels and on safety and security aspects.
