About The OMFS Handbook
This App has been developed as a non- profit source of information for junior doctors and dentists entering the specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. It has been developed from the ground up following the advice from respected leaders in this surgical field as well as multiple rounds of validation by existing junior doctors and dentists. Written specifically for the pocket format, it will provide users with an intuitive, rapid and scientifically sound source of information in your pocket.
Format:
Designed to reflect the broad working days of the junior doctors and dentists working in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, it is based upon five main categories:
1. Emergency Department
2. Surgery
3. Ward
4. Clinic & Revision Aids
5. Tools & Others
Emergency Department:
A section dedicated to the identification and management of acute surgical presentations in the Accidents & Emergency Department.
Ward:
A section dedicated to the baseline knowledge required of a dentist working on the ward and caring for patients within the specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Although primarily aimed at dentists it should provide quick reference information to junior doctors who have generally had little exposure to this field, such as the ward management of tracheostomies or facial fractures.
Surgery:
A section dedicated to the pre operative investigations, consent process and surgical techniques undertaken in this field. Specifically not designed as a comprehensive surgical textbook, it should still enable reminders of key surgical landmarks within common operations as well as post operative care and patient preparation immediately prior to surgery.
Clinic & Revision Aids:
A section dedicated to providing the background, clinical diagnosis and current management options for acquired and developmental diseases within the remit of the speciality, including trauma. Also will include subjects for exams revisions.
In App Purchase Content:
Although the tool has been designed primarily around a desire to provide a rapid source of pertinent clinical information, the Clinic & Revision Aids section has evolved into a general revision tool for the specialty. For this reason we have made this section available to purchase for a small sum (£2.99) which is going directly back into the further development of the App and to maintain the Author’s System. Following feedback from existing users, this section will continue to expand in its scope and depth.
Tools & Other Information:
A section dedicated to providing quick reference management aids for assessing visual acuity (Snellen chart), colour vision (Ishihara plates) and head injury (Glasgow Coma Scale). An address book tool is provided for storage of bleep numbers and hospital phone extensions of important contacts. More tools like these are in planning for later updates.
Here you will also find a subsection with subjects that do not fall into the previous categories.
About the authors:
The App was developed and designed by two clinicians in the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Arie Yuffa, Mr Johno Breeze and Ashish Jain, CEO of Hexims IT. Each category has been assigned an experienced sub editor who has been responsible for collating content from experts in the field. We will continue to update its content as the surgical specialty evolves and feedback from users is encouraged via our social networking sites.
