About Afro Studio

Created and designed by African rhythm professors, Afro Studio was conceived as an educational tool that embraces a unique pedagogical environment suitable for the study, composition and further incorporation of complex African rhythms and ensembles.

Anyone studying African rhythms knows that it can take a considerable amount of time until the body finally incorporate a given African ensemble including instruments like djembe, kenekeny, sagbang, dundun and shekere. In the process, many students write the rhythm, sing it, clap it, or even record it in order to speed up the embodiment of the musical structure.

To improve this learning process, Afro Studio allows to describe each African instrument pattern in a intuitively fashion without requiring any expertise on musical theory. Once created, a powerful playback feature allows to reproduce the ensemble at lower tempos for detailed analysis, or at higher rates to obtain the final feeling of the music. In both cases a moving cursor points the current beat in the graphic user interface, which also allow the user to modify the pattern in real time.

To have such a rich feature set in a mobile device is crucial for the practice of African music which rarely happens in an environment with a computer or other high-end processing hardware. Indeed, being able to take Afro Studio in your pocket right out to the fresh air where the rest of the drummers tend to be is the distinguishing feature we are offering.

Finally, the experienced musician can take advantage of Afro Studio to compose and get the feeling of complex musical structures and phrases to later play in the real ensemble. Also, since African drum rhythms are mainly transmitted by word of mouth, keeping them safe and stored in Afro Studio can help to mantain the tradition. I have been using this tool this way with great benefit and now I intend to share this with the rest of the African music community. Hope you can enjoy it too :)

Good app that could use a few extra features to make it great... especially for the price. 1. Keep playing when screen turns off!! 2. Ability to start a new empty project. 3. Easily select and loop one or more bars. 4. Swing/Shuffle feature 5. "Humanize" feature to make sounds less repetitive. 6. Make Equalizer volume controls easier to move. 7. Add ability to solo an instrument. 8. Ability to add bars to the start of the track. 9. Scroll screen as play bar moves across notes.

Have been playing and teaching Djembe for over 15 years. This is a great resourse for beginers and skilled drummers.

Ive never liked an app enough to bother with a rating. Exceeds expectations! Bought the full version after 10 minutes with lite one. A possible feature addition could include a scrolling type function for longer compositions keeping active measures in view. (If such a thing were possible)

There is a shortage of good ethnic percussion apps for android. This app is an exception. To the developer of the app I recommend adding the option of creating odd meter rhythms (7/8, 5/4, etc) and the ability to export rhythms in midi or musicxml format to be used in other programs. In general, I also recommend including the time signature in the name of the rhythms. This would allow users to more easily select and explore new rhythms of specific time signatures. Thanks.

This has got to be, despite the deceptively simple interface, one of the best drum machines ever. As it uses REAL notation it means it is simple to teach drumming, and also makes it simple for teaching your drumming group new parts. Only criticism? YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO "PITCH" OR TUNE THE DRUMS! for eg, if I use 2 djembes, then I NEED them to sound different. Do fix this? I look forward to enjoying this paid version. Thanks guys. Email me? It can crash. 1 drum was playing while were others muted.

Even using a tablet it is hard to find certain parts of longer compositions because I need to scroll horizontally through all the bars. To solve this you may implement the ability to 'tag' bars and show a small menu of the tags in order to skip to them. Another improvement can be that the bars move instead of the vertical timeline..so that users can follow and see what bar is played while its playing. What I also miss are more navigation buttons for 'back to start' and 'next bar'. Let me know ..Thanks!

Very versatile and intuitive. Would love to see more instruments (particularly some rattles and some very deep drums) and more options for "note" length/speed and time signatures. Bought the full version happily.
