Yahoo News Digest for Android
The very fact that this news aggregation service is not customisable is what makes it so good. Let me explain; we all have (and love) our FlipBoards, News 360, News Republics, etc. We've spent precious time setting, tweaking and refining filters. In return we are presented with content rich news, editorials and analysis worthy of proper digestion. But those instances when we don't have the time for the full three courses we need the equivalent of a snack to go and this is it. Brilliant..
I really gave this app a fair shot, and looked for ways to try to adjust the settings but I really don't like that there is no way to adjust the categories of news. I'm trying to stay informed about world/us news , and I couldn't care less about sports. I would much rather receive multiple news stories rather than basketball scores twice a day. Every other news app allows you to adjust what stories you'd like to read, this should too. I'll be uninstalling. I do think that it is otherwise a good app.
Honestly just a brilliant app and a really easy and fun way to read the news. I especially like that they encourage you to read all the articles in order to get the Fact of the Day. Plus if you look around, there's an Easter egg hidden in the app! The only thing I could complain about is that its summaries occasionally have a left-leaning bias.
I love reading the short version of the news with a small subset of headlines to lead me to the most important stories, which is why I love the idea of this app. The app is also beautiful with big photos and a unique design. But the content? It's sometimes incomprehensible. It's like they take a few random sentences from the full story and call it good. Acronyms go unexplained. Headlines don't match content. It's weird. I hope it gets better.
The app's functionality and design could not be better. I have loved using this app but now it is time for me to walk away. I want news, not propaganda or opinion. Articles selected are intensely and consistently left-leaning. They can't go just tell me what happened, they need to tell me how to think about what happened. Let me come to my own conclusions and JUST GIVE ME THE NEWS!
Was OK till Brexit then the Biased Broadcasting Corporation aka BBC and Sky ' This is what we want you to believe and how you should think' News Service started their pro Europe propaganda and their biased holy than though coverage if the immigration crisis. If I want their opinion or views on a politician, then I will ask. About as impartial as asking the KKK about race relations
This thing claims the news are curated but I'm seeing more and more errors like botched sentences, wrong quotations, and tweets that have nothing to do with the news subject but just share a keyword common to it, e.g, the space probe Rosetta and a tweet mentioning the singer Rosetta. That's an algorithm not curation, liars. Also, this isn't updated in years, and not surprisingly they still didn't put an auto dark theme in the article view, not just in the title. UPDATE: recently the tweets stopped working.
There is no customization or filtering so I have to slog through all of the sexist, racist, and plotical garbage in my feed constantly. An option for 'more stories like this' or 'fewer stories like this' would be great. Being able to select the topics covered maybe? I would opt out of their sports coverage straight away. Oh well
Whoever is feeding this app stories they're not doing their job well enough - stories are often with spelling errors and typos including in headlines. For twenty or so stories offered in a day that's just unacceptable. Also your recent political stories are overwhelmingly pro-Brexit - please try to offer balanced views.
Beautiful app and an excellent way to keep up with the world. It's just that, even with the international edition, the articles skew heavily towards US specific stories. I would prefer articles about the globe at large and ones that relate more to my region.
I read a lot of headlines and abstracts from Many Sources on a wide swath of topics. Some liberal, Some Artistic, Some Conservative, Some Political, Some Marketing, Some Advertising, Some Media, Most US and UK News Pubs. I use Feedly which is great. But... When I want to read to discover, to enjoy, to be surprised, within my wide interest rage, I turn to Flipboard. Laid out very well, easy to navigate. Extremely attractive. Deep where you want it to be, easy to cruise otherwise...
A UI is only good if the user can predict what result his action will have . That is not the case with Googllr and the current generation of programmers any more. On my Note 7 I tap on a link and get a brief message that I could go to my browser to see the content. If I am not fast enough I do mot know where to go. Using a browser may be cheap for Yahoo but I suddenly have to deal with a different UI. Not pleasant.
Great interface and design but the yahoo news feed is unbearable. Anything remotely political is skewed and biased. Not the best business model to constantly annoy half of your base. If there was a similar app that wasn't yahoo I'd jump on it. Non political news are interesting, however, and the app keeps you informed on things you normally wouldn't search for. Should be a 5 star App if Yahoo would shift Center even somewhat.
This app is one of my favorite apps but its not working anymore. I try to open it to check the news and it tells me to reload and check internet connection. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it has not fixed it. I will wait a week or so for an update to hopefully fix the issue, if not I'm am going to have to delete it unfortunately.
I have used this app for probably a year or two now, always worked great until recently. Between the multiple Yahoo security breaches and an app that has gone down for multiple days at a time in the last month - I'm done with this app and all things Yahoo. Uninstalled.
One of the best news apps out there until Trump arrived. I don't really care for Trump myself but when 6 out of the 7 articles are about how terrible a human he is and his adminstration on a day to day basis it's just wrong. So if you hate Trump, his family and everyone he knows this is the news app for you. I'll be back in four years Yahoo news.
This is nothing but biased reporting. When an article contradicts its very title, that should be an immediate warning... No thank you, I prefer knowing the truth. I will be deleting this app!
The articles are not long and drawn out. They are short and to the point. This is much appreciated since it's really not necessary to repeat a paragraph that has been previously written. ☺ The only problem is often it won't allow me into the news site.
Very well written reporting, unfortunately the Canadian edition is always lagging behind all the others. The Canadian edition is what I read and prefer, hopefully this will be improved. I've now sent feedback twice and the first without any response. Hopefully I'll get a response on this second attempt.
This app consistently fails to load. I get an error message about half the time I try to use it. When it does load new material (it often recycles stories) it's a decent news brief with useful references and contextual links. Wish it was more consistent. As it is, it's heading for deletion.
Great way to keep up with the day-to-day news even in your busy day. It gives you a summary of the top news story in every category of news. It only takes a few minutes to read through each one, and it is very informative even in the summarized version. It also gives you the link to the whole article if you want to read more. Yahoo news is a daily part of my day, and keeps me sharp, and in tune to the world around me.
With increasing frequency, the news is out-of-date or won't appear at all. There's often a mess of errors and a complete lack of clarity due to editing stories for length. I dislike the overuse of tabloid-esque headlines, which are often inappropriate due to the gravity of the story, and again lack clarity. Like others, I would enjoy some customization; and also the ability to save stories.
This app is nice when the content actually loads. The Canadian Edition rarely loads in the morning. Constantly being met with an "oops...something happened". I've sent multiple error reports over the last 6 months and it has yet to be resolved.
I love this app BUT I can only get about half of the posts. It claims there is a problem with my connection, with the interface and it is "unavailable" most if the time. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. Frustrating
But it consistently goes through downtime phases where all i get is the oops! message for several days, despite attempts to un/reinstall. I also miss the twitter feed component, which seemed to have gone missing from all articles for a few days before this latest oops period. My wifi connection is working well enough for me to post this review, so prolly not connectivity issue, yahoo. Sort it out. On the brightside, their pull quote game and related attribution has shown tremendous improvement.
This app was very functional up until Donald Trump became an unstoppable force. Now every update has an article that bashes the nominee and odds showing that yahoo is very bias. All I want is to see the news and not an agenda. Perhaps I will redownload this after the elections in November.
Was a fun way to catch up with 'news' though for the more news section it's uk section was weird in its choices! But it's stopped working, reinstalled but no change - just tells me to check my Internet connection which is working fine!
Content is great when it actually loads. I have mine set for 8am and 6pm and find that I get a loading error roughly 50% of the time. Connectivity isnt the issue - not sure if its something Yahoo can correct.
Great quick read news update. Condensed articles with indepth related news links. Love the design and ease of use. I also love the quotes and factoids you get if you read all the articles in that cycle. Just a great app to get caught up with all the major stories of the 24hr news cycle in 5 mins.
Love the design but am disappointed this past month especially by the misleading and biased reporting. The writers are pulpy, modern journalists a shade off of gossip rag reporting; opinion authoritatively offered up as facts. Disappointed; good platform, bad news.
I love the app. Perfect to get caught up on the daily news in this fast-paced world we live in. I recommend changing your settings to international news. Still gives you the main US news without all the entertainment garbage to sift through. Highly recommended!
This past week the app stopped working. Yes, my other news apps still work fine. So I deleted the app and downloaded a new version of Yahoo News from the Play Store. It starts up, but no news. That's bad news for me. Something is up. A glitch?
I'm not one to give five stars for apps. Four stars typically expresses my delight with anything I find here at the store that works well. But this app is an exception to the rule. It does what it intends to do exceptionally well. What more can you ask?
The app was working fine, until I saw there was an update. After I downloaded the update, I just keep getting this "failed to open" statement. Will just delete now. The constant "we'll be back" message is annoying. Definitely no news. Fix the problem.
I like this app and it's daily digests.. however for the past few months it's been giving out these oops! Error messages when I click on the notification to read the story... and once I've gotten this message, it make sit impossible for me to read the digest even if it's a couple days later and I try to go back... no matter which device I use. I've submitted requests to have someone help or address with the issue a couple times with no response... sad to say I might have to go to a new app!
Stops working for no reason. I get my notification, but when I open it I get an oops message and it tells me to check my network. If it is my network, then this is the ONLY app that doesn't work on it. Try again.
Latest version requires access to the microphone. Why would an app like this require microphone access? I sent an email to the developer address listed and I got no response. Not upgrading until this permission is explained. If you have an earlier version, avoid updating. If you haven't installed this yet, get a different app. Developer responded to my review by saying microphone access is needed for voice search but this app has no search function.
Great Yahoo News stunning pretty good best Thanks Yahoo !
There are too many times...STILL...when the content isn't ready, even hours after receiving notification...I don't hate it, I just wish it could be counted on.....Also, FREQUENTLY, the "stories" lack cohesion, as the program filling the role of reporter (regurgitator) blindly misses essential parts of a story, for a narrative that takes random hacks and disorienting jumps within the subject matter, leaving gaping info-voids book-ended between what can seem like UNRELATED swatches of PARTIAL information.

This could be Yahoo's saving grace, as it functions better than just about any other news viewer on Google Play. The idea of shortened, detailed information instead of huge articles on our phones is really appealing. The problem here rests in the fact that it can't really be customized. It encompasses whatever it deems 'Digestible' and some topics may not be of interest. If they could allow users to chose specific topics it would be five stars.
