The Western Wall is the holiest site in Israel and an important prayer site for Jews all around the world. It is also a public, government run space in Israel, in which women do not yet have equal rights to religious freedoms. Until recently, women were forbidden and arrested for praying out loud with prayer shawls at the Kotel. Now that we have these freedoms, we are confronted each month by protesters and violence. Still, women remain forbidden from reading the Torah at the Western Wall and Women of the Wall will continue to work towards the complete equality and freedom of women at the holy site.
