Chambers Dictionary

Still id does not work, since the last update! I use a Samsung Androit, 7 inches. This dictionary does not work does not open anymore, Waste of the funds, not ooerational.

I've used Chambers for years both as hard copy and when it was on CD. This app and the Thesaurus are both excellent but have one major flaw which is the reason why I have only rated it 4. When using the 'search' feature they will not find words with accented characters. Try looking up "Provencal" for instance - no problem - then try searching for it - not found! Very annoying when searching for crossword answers when you do not have all the letters. Please WW Software correct this problem and you will get the full 5 star rating. UPDATE December 2016 - App has now been updated and problem solved. Rating updated to 5 stars. Thanks WorldWeb

I bought my first Chambers dictionary in 1973 ("New Edition 1972") and I have used it much over the years. The best one volume English dictionary I have found. I have used it as an app for almost three years and it is as good as ever

My other half has the Windows version and has complained of the same problem but found a workaround, which does not work for me.

It used to be the best dictionary out there but for sometime now search with placeholder symbols stopped working.

Very nice UI, solid lexicography, and robust search capabilities — it even returns homonyms! The Oxford Dictionary of English app has fuller definitions, examples, and notes on usage, but without some features found here. You can have the best of both worlds within Chambers by creating an online reference to oxforddictionaries dot com followed by "/definition/english/@@". In fact, I consult American Heritage, Merriam-Webster, and others, all from this app. Brilliant!

This app has the same uncluttered layout and simplicity as the printed version and has the benefit of being a lot cheaper. The wildcard search is a useful feature too. The app saves your searches for easy assess and links to other services like Wikipedia. If you like the Chambers dictionary then you will like this.

Excellent app. Are there any plans to create a widget for it?

I've always loved the dictionary and now, with the option to change the theme, the design isn't too bad either. It's still not as nice as the pre-material-design version, but I guess I have to accept that Google is, for some reason, trying to make the world look like a colourblind child's drawing.

I have used this app for about three years. It is simple and intuitive to use, links words, pattern searches and is completely stable. The underlying dictionary is arguably the best there is. Why would use a paper dictionary when this is available for a very modest sum. Fantastic value. And now updated to the latest ( 2014) edition of the dictionary at no extra cost, unbelievably good. New material design interface now has colour choices, which make it easier on the eye.

I have a lot of dictionaries. Both e and paper.Many are good, many not quite.This one,the Chambers, I love. After last update even more.

#1 dictionary, far better than other dictionary apps

Very useful. What would really help is if it could be used in a floating widget so that I dont have to close the script Im working on whilst using it.

Really useful. Needs to distinguish between Dictionary and Thesaurus when in use.

Would score 5 stars if it included a definition search, e.g. search for "beloved" would find "Jo".

For the app switcher in the index menu, and theme variation.

Amazing dictionary for those who are studying theology. With this dictionary, I do not have the need to look up different dictionary to find the word I wanted. Save me lots of time. Thumbs up !

Just excellent

Nexus 7 (2013) with Android 4.4.2. Crashes very frequently, sometimes with an "Error 2" message, but not always. Otherwise very useful though the UI design could be better, e.g. it took me weeks to notice that it had an anagram feature even though that's something I use daily for crosswords. These problems don't seem to happen on my Nexus 4 (same version of Android) although I haven't used it as much so maybe I've just been lucky. Update: Still crashing almost every time I use it on the N7. Getting very frustrated with this. Also when started in landscape mode it's always upside down from how I usually hold the tablet and has to be flipped to the correct orientation. Update 18/08/2015: Installed the latest version this morning and have seen one crash so far on my 2013 Nexus 5. I'm now on Android 5.1.1. Update 22/08/2015: tried the LastPass fix and so far it seems to be working.

The Dictionary combined with the Thesaurus are my favourite apps. I use them every day to help solve cryptic crosswords. Just before I bought my tablet I spent £40 on a new Chambers dictionary but now I never look at it. The Dictionary app's ability to solve anagrams is uncanny.

Best. Because, EASY TO UNDERSTAND accurate meanings, huge word list.

It works offline. Tried some searches in flight mode and all words showed up; same as online.

To be able to write anything I need to first push "x" in search box, lower keyboard, put it back again and click in search box to be able to write anything there. A bit annoying.

Easy to use, and great for helping with crosswords. It's amazing how many times it has come in handy.

Brilliant. This has really sped up my solving time with the Listener. It's one of those apps that you didn't know you needed until you have it. And then wondered how you ever done without it !! Highly recommended.
