भारतवर्ष में बेताल-पच्चीसी काफी पहले से मनोरंजन और शिक्षा के साधन के रूप में रहे हैं। ये मनोरंजन के रूप में हमें नीति का भी ज्ञान दे देते हैं। बेताल हर रोज़ एक कहानी सुनाता है और आख़िर में राजा से ऐसा सवाल कर देता है कि राजा को उसका जवाब देना ही पड़ता है। उसने शर्त लगा रखी है कि अगर राजा बोलेगा तो वह उससे छूटकर फिर से पेड़ पर जा लटकेगा। लेकिन यह जानते हुए भी सवाल सामने आने पर राजा से चुप नहीं रहा जाता।

बैताल पचीसी (वेताल पचीसी या बेताल पच्चीसी (संस्कृत:बेतालपञ्चविंशतिका) पच्चीस कथाओं से युक्त एक ग्रन्थ है। इसके रचयिता बेतालभट्ट बताये जाते हैं जो न्याय के लिये प्रसिद्ध राजा विक्रम के नौ रत्नों में से एक थे। बैताल पचीसी की कहानियाँ भारत की सबसे लोकप्रिय कथाओं में से हैं। इनका स्रोत राजा सातवाहन के मन्त्री “गुणाढ्य” द्वारा रचित “बड कहा” (संस्कृत: बृहत्कथा) नामक ग्रन्थ को दिया जाता है जिसकी रचना ई. पूर्व ४९५ में हुई थी । कहा जाता है कि यह किसी पुरानी प्राकृत में लिखा गया था और इसमे ७ लाख छन्द थे। आज इसका कोई भी अंश कहीं भी प्राप्त नहीं है। कश्मीर के कवि सोमदेव ने इसको फिर से संस्कृत में लिखा और कथासरित्सागर नाम दिया। बड़कहा की अधिकतम कहानियों को कथा सरित्सागर में संकलित कर दिए जाने के कारण ये आज भी हमारे पास हैं। “वेताल पन्चविन्शति” यानी बेताल पच्चीसी “कथा सरित सागर” का ही भाग है।
