NOTES
ASMARA, the capital town of Eritrea is set at about 2500 m.a.s.l. and, climate is quite mild all year round with some sporadic rainfalls. But, usually they last one or two hours and the sun come out again clear in the sky to warm the air.
Humidity is very low.
At the time we visit Asmara, the country was enough safe to travel but you needed a permit to go out of the town, easily to get and issued by the tourism office.
MENDEFERA - Once known as Adi Ugri, it's a little town set at about 54 Km south of Asmara.
The town of was built during the Italian era, and now is a bustling market town where plenty of dromedaries can be seen every morning load with goods lazing at sun. Here the climate is much warmer than Asmara so take care and bring an hat, at least.
WHERE TO STAY/TO EAT - ASMARA
Do not forget that Asmara was the centre of the old Italian Empire in Africa so many splendors of that era still survive and building or villas now are housing hotels, restaurants, clubs and embassies. In dowtown you can find at short distance two or three good place to get accommodations but just a few km out, you can get medium and deluxe hotels. Along the main avenue there is a plenty of cafés, restaurants and other food stalls.
WHERE TO STAY/TO EAT - MENDEFERA
We suggest to stay in Asmara and make a day trip to Mendefera. There are just some budgets places to stay more fit for locals than foreigners.
The town is clean with some simple bars where to get coffee or eat something. Along the market road several vendors to get fruits and local fresh cooked food.
