About iBird Lite Free Guide to Birds

Our most awesome update ever.

iBird Lite Free Guide to Birds is a free demo version of our comprehensive paid iBird Pro Guide to Birds app and introduces you to birding with no cost. Whether you are an experienced birder, a bird watcher or a beginner at birding, iBird’s intelligent search engine and comprehensive species accounts will turn you into a birding expert. Completely up to date with the 2016 AOU and ABA checklists, iBird Lite contains a database of 50 species of both native and rare North American and Hawaiian birds. It's the perfect way to evaluate if you want to enjoy the hobby of birding for free.

Using iBird's patented “Percevia™” matching system you can identify birds by color, location, shape, habitat or any one of our 34 identification attributes. You can even search by bird song. iBird's species pages have thousands of built-in bird songs from the talented recordists of the Xeno-Canto community, hundreds of professional high resolution bird photographs plus hand drawn composite illustrations (with field marks) and detailed range maps. No other bird app offers both illustrations and photographs.

From well-known birds to exotic rare species, iBird works like magic, revealing a list of birds that perfectly matches your search choices. With over 1 million total downloads, iBird is the standard that all birding apps are measured by.

I downloaded this app with a mind to purchase the full one if I found it useful in identifying birds. Unfortunately I found it unhelpful. I didn't see a way to sort the birds in a manner that assists identification, like color or perching or water. All I saw were thumbnail pictures that weren't even photos (which I find more accurate). I did like the rather detailed info ( the bird calls are nice) you can access once you've determined what you're looking at. May work for some but just not what I wanted.

C70%
by C####:

I'm missing several species when I try and search for even some of the most common birds. Was disappointed wish it had more content.

K70%
by K####:

Streaming only nonsense. When I'm out in the bush, I'm actually in the bush. No WiFi. No cell towers. That makes this app and it's paid version nearly useless.

H70%
by H####:

Much improved detail over the early versions but it is basically an example of the pricier versions of iBird. Good for the price.

C70%

Doesn't even have Bald eagle, really? How come

C70%

Very helpful field guide. Needs More species to be covered. Still a Good birding aid.

Just a "taste test" and not a full meal deal. Blue Jay is absent, for example. Not useful and waste of space (huge app.) Uninstalling.

Not worth it for only 50 birds

No falcon.

I tried to use it to identify birds in Utah but it definitely was not made in Utah. Very few Utah birds are in it.

Not thorough, but essentials 4 many common birds. Nice!

R70%

This app is great, as a lite version, it only has 30 or so birds, but gives you a taste of the pro version. I recommend this over petersons field guide without hesitation!

W70%
by W####:

This is not a lite version of the full app. It is a sample. "Lite" implies less features than the full app. This app is the full version with a crippled database. Such a shame as the app itself looks quite good.

R70%
by R####:

Just entered a ton of attributes for a basic male Cardinal and the search brought up no birds. Seriously?

X70%

Its a good starting app into the world of birds, didn't like how each bird had to be downloaded though

B70%

This app is a great tool. I especially like that it has recordings of the birds. Hearing what a bird sounds like is much beter than trying to read what noise the bird makes.

G70%
by G####:

Couldn't find any info so downloaded it and found only 50 North American birds. Disappointed but as free nothing lost. Seemed to work ok on Galaxy S2. ibird UK (Apple only) costs £1.99 this month and looks good.

N70%
by N####:

Niether his web or app, found my bird. Still want to know name of brown sparrow like bird with red cap. Pro verdion of app may be much better?
