تعتبر عدن من أقدم المدن العربية التي كانت تمثل محور تواجد حضاري للنشاط التجاري الذي جعلها محط أنظار كبرى دول العالم ، وقد ورد ذلك في كثير من الدراسات والمخطوطات التاريخية القديمة بتأكيد من منظمة اليونيسكو في تقريرها الذي صدر مؤخراً وتم الإشارة فيه أن عدن تتصدر اقدم مدن العالم . وقد حظيت عدن بإهتمام كثير من الدول الكبرى لما تتميز به من خصائص ومميزات .
تعتبر عدن أهم منفذ طبيعي على بحر العرب والمحيط الهندي فضلاً عن تحكمها بطريق البحر الأحمر عن طريق الممر المائي المعروف بباب المندب، وتشكل عدن أنموذجاً متميزاً لتكامل النشاط الاقتصادي وتنوع البنيان الإنتاجي، إذ جمعت بين الأنشطة الصناعية والسمكية والتجارية والسياحية والخدمية، وتنبع أهميتها من كونها ميناءً تجاريًّا من أهم الموانئ في المنطقة، ومنطقة تجارة حرة إقليمية ودولية.
