Slate for Android
Long time Slate Plus subscriber disappointed. Switched to Android and loved the Apple app much more compared to this one. Would list design flaws but just hope they make the app more like the one in the Apple store. Also the Pop up full screen video ads are especially obnoxious. Not only I can't log in to view Slate Plus content but feel the ads are extraneous for those who support you all directly.
Videos mentioned in articles don't download, photos also often don't appear, there are no sharing links, and with the latest version the app now defaults to the videos page. This is a totally lame app. I'm outta here.
Terrible app. It lets you read *some* articles but is seriously limited: First, you don't see embedded images (such as of a tweet or some other inserted links or content) so those articles are totally unreadable. Second, there's no way to share an article (on FB, by SMS, etc.) I get very frustrated by this app.
I agree with the others, lack of embedded pictures and media, as well as not being able to see comments, means I'm missing alot of the experience. This has the potential to be a good app. Please address these issues. It's a pain to have to pull up the website to see pics.
As of June 2017 this is a behind the times app. There is no connection for comments. The interface looks just bad. The IOS app is much better. This app has reduced my Slate reading considerably.
Awful. Worst trash journalism ever. Enjoy 8 years of Republican alt right dominance. It's all on you for disengaging moderates with your extremist politics.
Slate started transitionin early (comparatively) to being a mobile-friendly news source but DAMN this app is lazy. It's not terrible--it's stable, it's not unattractive, the ads aren't too bad (not sure how they offer mobile content to Slate+ subscribers)--it's just the least possible product they could have offered. Like really, I have no other apps on my android that don't offer a "share" option. It's illogical! Don't they WANT us to share their articles? Ask someone on Quora how to build a better app.
The two biggest problems are: 1) Graphics don't get rendered (tweets, interactives, etc.), and 2) can't share directly from the app. Fix either of those to get a 4th star. Fix both to get the 5th star. I read Slate several times a day, and it's always one of my first stops for reasoned analysis of fast-breaking events.
The writers are fantastic, but the app needs to be revamped. Articles are confusing when based on pictures that aren't in the app. I love the website, please make the app more user friendly!
App shuts down randomaly, and almost always when the podcast tab is picked.... very frustrating.
Good reporting but this App is crap. Buggy, poor to no formatting or images. Hasn't been updated since February of 2016. Better experience accessing through Google newsstand.
Can no longer share stories from the app. Fails to render special characters and any in-line photos or embedded tweets.
Probably the most annoying thing about this app is that it can't display any of the images or tweets that are often embedded the articles.
I read Slate daily and love the content. The app is frustrating bc I can't share articles or even "open in browser" from the app. Also, embedded content doesn't come through so much of the time we miss the punchline. The app LOOKS good and, for me, is stable (I use a Samsung Galaxy Note). Just wish I could easily share the great content.
Whenever a picture is in an article it doesn't show up in the app. Also, if any special characters are used in a word or name they don't display correctly. Also there is no way to view or write comments. This has been the case for a couple of years, you would think they would have fixed it by now.
I came to the app with the hope comments would work better than in a mobile browser, but no comments in the app! In the mobile browser comments use a pop-up but closes often before allowing a reply. It also makes it difficult to read!
Other users have said it very well here. The app shows no embedded content, (images or videos) no comments, and does not facilitate sharing of articles. I have no problem with how the app presents text on my screen. Swiping between articles also works well. But, please work out how to show embedded images! Thx.
update 18 may. No longer crashes on launch. ------- Crashes on launch. S5. Update 5 march 2016 - Frequent freezes, no embedded content (video, pix, etc) loads. Most stories need to be reloaded in browser to view properly.
The app gives you basic articles but whenever it makes a reference to let's say a tweet or graph you won't be able to see it on the app. You then have to open your browser and find the article again. It's just better to put a link on your phone to the site rather than download the app. For added annoyance they have now added ads in between articles.
No sharing, images and videos don't appear or work. Only use because I love slate. Slate, pls invest a little in your app!
Slate needs to wake up and produce an app that can publish pictures and videos in the articles. Also missing out on a lot of traffic by not allowing people to share to social media from the app.
This app has been out for five years now. In all that time they've yet to figure out how to show embedded images and videos in the app. Fully 2/3 of the articles displayed are useless, because every picture and video is just skipped over. This is particularly egregious for those articles that are just filler text between images of tweets; these become ludicrously incoherent. If Slate can't figure out the technical hurdle of showing an image inside an article, then it ought to at least filter out those articles from its feed which are unreadable. It's confounding that they haven't even exerted this amount of effort. That being said, I use this app several times a week. When you happen to hit an article that has all of the content visible, it's pretty good reading.
Does Apple pay these guys $$ to promote the Apple ecosystem? Because if you only listened to Slate you would think iTunes is the only place to listen to their podcasts. The alternative is more depressing - smart people that are also stupid assholes.
It presents the articles, but you can use a web browser for that. Doesn't allow you to discuss the articles, unlike the web, so big thumbs down.
Decent content, terrible app. No ability to change the font size. Poor formatting. No meaningful updates. Missing content on almost every article. Good thing it's free.
[Aug 2015] Pictures and videos don't display. At least add a button or link that will allow the page to load in my web browser. How about an app just for slate+ susbscribers!?! [2014-Sep-14]--The android version is dated and lacks features that have been in the iOS version for a while.
This app only gives you the beta versions of the articles. For example, there will be a reference to "this article", or "this video" and then no link
Why? This is the weirdest app and is the opposite of interactive. Not user friendly, I can't share an article or see any pictures or see or make a comment. I've never seen anything like it. I always end up just going to the website. I don't even know why I keep it on my phone.
Come on! This is seriously constricting your engagement. Many times the comments are more entertaining than the article.
Good but incomplete stories. Images and some text don't appear. Some stories seem to be truncated.
I used to like Slate, but it has devolved into a blog aggregator with not very interesting content. Recently, the same annoying popover interstitial ad shows up every few page views. This app and site are no longer worth my time.
Should be called the Hillary Clinton propaganda app. Definitely not for real progressives.
Please include pinch to scale font size and working links to pictures and referenced content.
Go to the website. The app doesn't display videos, photos, tweets or any other content. Long term, continuing problem on multiple Android phones.
In addition to all the other problems people have mentioned, now I constantly get pop up ads in Italian! Is this a virus? I'm uninstalling.

I like articles but can't adjust font on app. Much too small if visually impaired. Useless for me.
I only read Slate for Dear Prudence and to see how the other political side thinks. So the content for me is so so. That aside, the app itself is horrendous. You can only see the first picture and no other media in any article. You can't see comments. Clicking on a link will open it in the app, and actually within the very article, rather than just sending it to my Internet app. It's also organized very differently than the website for no reason. Overall, you prob should just stick with the website.
Since my previous review last year when I purchased a Droid Ultra, Slate "fixed" its app. It works on Android Kit Kat phones. However, I'm now facing a similar circumstance as a year ago. I recently replaced the Ultra with an LG G2, which runs Lollipop. I can read articles via the G2, but I cannot listen to podcasts. It certainly is a step up from the problem I faced in early 2014 when I bought my Ultra, but it still gets a single star.

The app is only useful to me as a convenient place to take note of articles I might want to share later from the website. But this extra step makes me less likely to share the articles. What is the point of allowing app users to read but not share content? We're not paid subscribers. It's all available on the website. Do you want sharing or do you plan to erect a paywall? I would understand either decision, but obliging is to go to the website to share just seems like a way of diminishing your impact.
