Schizophrenia Poetry

Schizophrenia is a disease that affects approximately 1 in 100 people. It has no cure, however 1 in 4 sufferers make a full recovery. The illness can be treated successfully with antipsychotic medication.

This application is a place of refuge, for those with similar mental health backgrounds, who can share their experiences, and express their beautiful thoughts. Myth and social stigma has blighted the perception of schizophrenia and those who suffer with it often say it is worse than the illness itself.

Media and Hollywood inaccurately portray schizophrenia as split personality, namely because the word schizophrenia in Greek means 'split mind', a reference to a break with reality. The illness dissociative identity disorder (DID) is not the same and is an unrelated illness.

People with schizophrenia are widely associated with acts of violence which is unfounded. People with the illness are contrary to myth, more likely to be a victim of crime. This application is a tool for poetry therapy, which has been known to ease cognitive deficits and symptoms of withdrawal, helping sufferers to cope with traumatic experiences.
