Этот апокалипсис выделяется среди других подобных текстов тем, что авторство его приписано Иоанну Богослову, создавшему Откровение, признанное Церковью каноническим. Впрочем, по содержанию между каноническим писанием и апокрифом очень мало общего.

В апокрифе обильно цитируются Книги Ветхого и Нового Заветов, но не все цитаты подлинные. Возможно, определенная часть текста (та, где содержатся эти неподлинные цитаты) является позднейшей вставкой.

Часть публикуемых апокрифов возникла раньше канонического "Апокалипсиса", в иудейской среде, часть - позже, вплоть до IX-X вв. по Р. X., их авторы - уже христиане.
Во вступительной статье прослеживается история жанра откровения, причем рассмотрение не ограничивается текстами, вошедшими в сборник; особое внимание уделено этому жанру в Книгах Ветхого и Нового Завета. Комментарий позволит читателю оценить соотношение между каноническими и апокрифическими трактовками библейских событий, составить более ясное представление о тематике апокалипсической литературы.

Имя "Откровения" или "Апокалипсиса" мы привыкли относить к одному произведению - письму, в котором апостол Иоанн рассказывает единоверцам о потрясающем видении, явившемся ему однажды на острове Патмос. Недаром само греческое слово "апокалипсис" вошло во многие языки как синоним мировой катастрофы, гибели всего творения.
Но первоначально "апокалипсис" означало просто "раскрытие", а в уточненном смысле - "раскрытие будущего, сокрытого от людей": "Откровение Иисуса Христа, которое дал Ему Бог, чтобы показать рабам Своим, чему надлежит быть вскоре" (Откр. 1:1).
