About Lux Auto Brightness

The original custom auto brightness solution for Android.

"To put it simply, Lux kicks the pants off of Android’s stock brightness manager, and it’s worth every cent." - Lifehacker

"Lux is a third-party app that allows you to easily calibrate your phone’s brightness sensor, saving you battery power and reducing eye strain if your phone is normally too bright in dark rooms." - HowToGeek

Lux isn't your ordinary brightness app. It intelligently adjusts the brightness of your display based on the environment you're in. If you step into a dimly lit room, Lux will automatically lower the brightness of your display to make it not only comfortable to read, but to also preserve battery power.

Lux is also able to adjust the screen temperature of your display automatically to make it appropriate for night usage. At sunset, you can have Lux automatically warm your display and switch to your Night profile. If you're an astronomer, you can enable astronomer mode to cut out harsh white light. If you have a root enabled phone, you may even be able to apply these enhancements at a low level with Lux's plug-in system.

Perhaps the best thing about Lux is that you can teach it how to behave. If the backlight is too bright or dim for your liking, simply open the provided Dashboard, adjust the brightness slider to the level you desire, then hold the link button. Lux will use this new 'link' as a reference in future.

Give it a go! I want you to test Lux for more than the 15 minute refund period offered by Google. I understand that some devices may not have the best quality light sensor, and that you may need more time to play around with settings. If you find that Lux doesn't suit you after the 15 minutes is up, you can request a refund within a week of purchase via e-mail - no questions asked.

What are users saying about Lux Auto Brightness

1. It NEEDS "Auto" under the "user profile" section, so I can have it set on "adjust dynamically" and user profile as "Auto" and it would do the work for me like it should, so u can go from pretty much pitch black to outside in the bright sun. 2. Allow us to create our own profiles and rename it 3. Every once in a while it's stops working right and says subzero isn't available during sleeping. It happens each time I open Ebay

I used this in the past, but uninstalled it due to significant issues when I moved to a Galaxy S5. Since I paid for this app, I am trying it again on my Galaxy S7 and it's working well so far. It's a very useful tool / utility that works better than the Android Auto brightness function.

I have not to many issues with this app, learned how to handle it awhile ago. I can understand this app would need permission on camera and locations for auto task. But why does it need permissions to my phone and storage? It also clocking over 123 mb of memories in 3 hours? Maximum usage up to 200 mb according to app manager. I'm not rooted nor making any extra settings like linking profiles. Is it mining data from users? If it is then it's a sad thing to happened.

Adjustable and works great. My only concern is with my V20, it doesn't change the brightness of the second screen or navigation buttons. So you end up with a perfectly lit screen, but blindingly bright nav buttons and 2nd screen. I'd love to see a fix for this even though it's an isolated issue. Update: after a short hiatus from Lux, this issue seems to have been fixed! (Both the 2nd screen and nav buttons). THANKS and GREAT JOB!

This is always the first app I install whenever I get a new phone. The automatic night mode and subzero brightness have saved my eyes from countless hours of strain. And the Tasker support is very convenient as well. My only complaint is that there is no Android Wear support. I'd love to have my watch's color temperature and brightness be the same as my phone when night mode kicks in.

by M####:

Nice when it works but most of the time it doesn't detect the ambient light...I have to change from AUTO to MAN to AUTO for it read the current ambient value. Happens after unlocking the phone after pulling it from the pocket; no matter how long I leave it unlocked it won't update the brightness...toggling from AUTO to MAN back to AUTO is impossible if outside in the day.

STILL not fixed???? Hasnt worked in a year. No longer auto adjusts to light. Every update resets the preferences. Astronomer mode no longer functional--screen is now a bright red which defeats the purpose. App doesn't play well with chrome. Etc etc. Please fix, was one lf my favorite apps

Buyer be aware: This app has its fair share of problems and bugs but the dev doesn't respond to email nor feedback. Most notable is that the app hasn't been updated to work properly with Android 7. For instance, I think the app's persistent notification feature makes Android to hang up. At least these problems go away when I shut down this app.

X70%

I would not pay for this version until the developer fixes the issues with the new Android software. Just like all of the other user reviews say, This used to be a great application. Now, It constantly crashes and causes a myriad of other issues with every other application on your phone.

Z70%
by Z####:

Long time user of this app, and it's great but with my new phone I can't interact with permissions dialog boxes without putting lux to sleep temporarily. Don't know which services to add to sleep list to prevent having to manually turn off lux to grant permissions to apps. Help.

M70%
by M####:

I paid for this seemingly good app, but the list of apps that break when Lux is in use is growing. I know these apps aren't common, such as Spotify, Lastpass and Amazon (sarcasm). I wouldn't buy this if I were you, reading these reviews. Sure, add the apps to the Lux sleep list. I just uninstalled instead. What's the point if it breaks so many other apps? I'm not rooted or running anything other than common apps. Ridiculous.

M70%
by M####:

Beware of the 'draw over other apps' thing. It hurts ability to set permissions in other apps. . Trying to figure out if temp disabling is enough, while setting unrelated permissions on other apps. Or maybe, not. . Even affected morning alarms.

M70%
by M####:

It's like the brightness never goes down when I want it to. It doesn't matter what links I've added or if it's on default, but sometimes there's light out and lux doesn't sense it and gets super dark, yet when all the lights are off out detects 54lx from who knows where. Please fix the app. It used to work perfectly

M70%
by M####:

Used to be great, but they've fallen behind the times, Marshmallow's selective permissions. It didn't play nice with them. It needs permission to draw over the screen, and sometimes crashes if it doesn't. But if it has the permission, then you can't give any permissions to other apps, because it is drawing over the screen during a secure view. They really just need to do some testing...

M70%
by M####:

I really like this app, but there are major problems with its "apps that appear on top" features. As long as that setting is turned on, Lux will mess with other apps and not allow you to make certain selections until it is turned off. A recent example is Spotify. As long as Lux is allowed to appear on top of other apps, the menu buttons in the "now playing" part of the app don't respond to presses at all. As soon as it is disabled, they work again. I would be fine just leaving that setting disabled, but then Lux will randomly crash, and the low light settings no longer work.

Some programs make me turn off this program to install properly with the "overlay" settings. Is there a simpler way to turn it off when installing such an app? That's kind of a pain to go through all those steps. A power OFF BUTTON would really help with the latest version of Android - marshmallow.THANKS

Purchased the full version of this app, but developer has apparently never gotten it to work properly with 6.0 Marshmallow. Used to work flawlessly, now crashes and constantly interferes with other apps. Ultimately forced to uninstall. Why not fix? Last update was in May 2016. (Moto X Pure)

V70%
by V####:

Now it keeps sleeping (on my Android 7). Works well but on some apps it stops any screen interaction with the app. The screen overlay technology being used renders some apps and entering text impossible - so making this app a minor problem. Can you please fix - then it will be 5 stars.

M70%
by M####:

"A disable in landscape mode" is urgently needed. Quite annoying when you are trying to play some game (or any other occasion that hand get in front of the sensor) and the screen keeps dimming and brightening like having a seizure.

M70%
by M####:

I bought this purely for the Smart Profile feature. But it doesn't work at all. I have to reset my location twice a day to get the Smart Profile to change. That's more work than just switching profiles manually. I emailed about a refund within days of buying and haven't gotten a reply. It's been 2 months since I sent the email. No updates in the app in 5 months. What a joke

M70%
by M####:

I loved this app, but with 6.0+ if you don't allow it to draw over other apps (which causes a host of issues) it just crashes over and over. Dev seems to have no interest in fixing this as it's been reported for quite a long time. A shame as the app is awesome in most other respects.

V70%

I have an LCD screen so sub zero filter has no benefit to me. I had ensured all my samples are over 4%. For Approximately one hour The app works great. Now I cannot open the app till I give Draw over permission. I don't want to release this permission as it causes issues update other apps

M70%
by M####:

I been using this om all my android devices and I love this. Lately I been having this annoying issue where If any other app asks for permission for something lux draw over is conflicting and I have to stop lux and start it again. This is very annoying for me. Can you please have some attention to fix this.. Thanks. I would love to update this to 5 stars.

Been using this for a while and has worked well. However, the widget just stops functioning all of a sudden. I have to remove it, then add it again to get it to work. Kind of annoying. I see others have the same problem, but no update in a long time...boo.

M70%
by M####:

It has got to figure out its problems with interfering with overlay settings. I can't change any settings for other apps without FCing this one and restarting it. Very annoying and a deal breaker. Otherwise, excellent

P70%
by P####:

I used the free app and thought everything was great with it. I purchased it. Then I noticed other apps that draw over the screen stopped working and I would get errors saying another app was preventing them from working. After some research I found it was Lux. I had to shut off Lux draw over app functionality to get my other apps to work. That seemed fine but then Lux started doing weird things and eventually I go the "app has stopped working". Lux is a nice app but it broke my other apps. Please fix!

M70%
by M####:

Works OK on some devices, not so well on others. On my Galaxy Tab it doesn't switch the night mode on even though location is set properly. The other problem, which is pretty annoying is that it makes the device freeze for a couple of seconds on wake. This happens on different devices work different settings, even when set to adjust manually. I've had enough and exploring the alternatives.

M70%
by M####:

Fails to read proximity and light sensors constantly even as other apps on the same devices have no problems. Fortunately newer versions of Android make this dinosaur from the gingerbread era superfluous.

M70%
by M####:

This is one of the most important apps on any Android phone. Buy it, you will not be disappointed. However, Marshmallow seems to have ruined some things on my Samsung Galaxy s5. Notifications are full brightness and bypass lux settings. As is the new terrible uninstall page (which used to happen in the background). I would love for these to be fixed and go back to five stars.

M70%
by M####:

The display temperature for Night Mode is pretty cool, including Astronomer mode. The main display levels are obviously the most useful though, and the app toggle really helps. Battery drain is pretty significant on it though, even with Wake setting that is only supposed to do things on wakeup. It cut my battery life to 1/3.

C70%
by C####:

This used to be amazing. But lately it is really flaky. Often it doesn't adjust the brightness, leaving me with an unreadable screen when I've walked outside, for example. And sometimes it adjusts when it shouldn't, dimming the screen randomly and preventing me from finishing what I'm doing without going into the app and telling it to adjust again (at which point it adjusts correctly).

L70%
by L####:

Since upgrading to Marshmallow the app often decides on its own to go into sleep mode and then the auto-brightness stops working. Disabling power saving options doesn't seem to help.

T70%

brightness slider bar stays visible in the quick settings panel Android 6.0.1 on my S7 Edge but not on previous model. Now there is a redundant brightness slider if this app is used. Videos in full screen using the left side for btightness in full screen does nothing... other than that stuff it works fine

T70%
by T####:

This is a must have app but last updated ruined it, now it misbehave as it pleases. Please fix it ASAP. This is one of the best brightness apps and it'd be a big loss if abandoned by developers. Best replacement is Velis auto brightness, read the app manual and it will work wonders for free.

Does What It Says On the Tin. This app works away seamlessly in the background and changes the screen brightness to make sure I don't waste my battery. I have had to set a couple of things such as reading on my kindle app in a dark room, but mostly it just works. Much easier on the eyes as well, compared to before installation. Thanks. Now using it on nexus 5 and galaxy tab s 8.4, previously Nexus 7 and Nexus 4

N70%
by N####:

App has promise, and certainly works better than stock android brightness, but on Marshmallow Android 6.0, it's overlay prevents other apps from setting permissions, which renders Lux useless and even worse, totally annoying. Wish I could get my $3.80 back, as this app is unusable on Android 6.0. Also crashes a lot.

N70%
by N####:

When it works, it's amazing and quickly grew to appreciate it. However, it only works when I'm not on the web. Whenever chrome is open, the app goes into a crazy on/off cycling, which is difficult to stop and makes the app impossible to use. I wrote the developer twice about the issue. Both messages went unreplied. So this is the best I can do, given that the app is a beautiful idea but doesn't work (and my helpful feedback was ignored... But hey, I'm just one user). Good luck

X70%
by X####:

Thank you for fixing the crashing. The app is now usable however it seams to cause a bit of lag and sluggishness when using the phone, especially when pulling down the drop down menu. App normally is 5 stars but I think there's some kinks to work out with the latest android version.

T70%
by T####:

This app has lots of bugs: it doesn't automatically change brightness when it should, but most importantly it blocks other apps from getting accessibility services permission. It's really absurd. It's a waste of time and money.

I use F.lux on PC, and this was a no-brainer. Whitelist for videos, YT, gallery, or any app u set.
