StudentMob - for UW for Android
So the problem is this: I'm a grad student and my program is nowhere on here (weirdly enough). I was forced to choose a major though, so I picked one that was eh close enough. There didn't seem to be any clear way to choose your year in school (possibly this instead of your age?). The notification icon is inelegant for its small size (a compact version just for notifs would be nice). Lastly, there doesn't seem to be a place to leave feedback, report issues or typos, or anything like that. Tl;dr ehhhh
This app is so great for meeting and connecting with other UW students! It's easy to find other people with similar interests and hobbies and it's great to see what other huskies are up to.
It's a great platform to connect with friends & posting/sharing is a lot of fun!
So, I'm a nontraditional studenta coming back to school after a long time away. In all honesty, it feels wierd that right next to my name my age is displayed right there. It mean it's like right there, like that's the main attribute that describes me as a person. There isn't an option to not display your age either. It's just kinda weird.
Would be great if I could login with Facebook (crashes the app currently) - the registration process was a chore and my major was listed wrong (Technical Communication is now called Human Centered Design and Engineering). There's a typo ('speical') on the intro tour and it's not very visually appealing (the tour has way too much text). All in all, it seems this could be awesome if more people used it. I suggest making the streams more apparent (the first thing you see) as these make the app valuable.
Two main issues I see as an app developer myself. 1. Advertise more. There is few people on this social network and as of right now it doesn't seem very active. If this app was by UW students, then it shouldn't be hard to spread the word on existing social media. 2. Make the design native Android. This looks like it was made by some third party software that creates both iOS and Android versions but the Android version looks bad. I'm a back end developer, and even I'm not fond of the poor design.
I felt like there was too long of a process to get started with this app. First the passcode to even sign up, then the email code, then making the initial profile, then having to go through all the interests and avatar pages with no way to save your progress. I lost internet connection and ended up losing all my sign-in progress, and it turns out the app didn't even remember my log-in information, because I didn't manage to fill in every last interest page before the app stopped.
This app is awesome. As soon as we can get a ton of users on here, it will get even better! So happy to see it evolving, too. Definitely a fan of the new update!
Finally after 2 years at UW, if I type UW into the Play Store an actual app for us shows up! I asked my friends at other colleges if their school has a social media app just for them, and guess what? They don't... And they're jealous!
