نبذة تاريخية عن الحزب:
تشكل حزب الاتحاد من أجل الجمهورية في موريتانيا على يد من عرفوا بنواب حجب الثقة الذين وقفوا إلى جانب الرئيس الحالي محمد ولد عبد العزيز عندما كان قائدا للحرس الرئاسي، وطالبوا بعزل الرئيس السابق سيدي محمد ولد الشيخ عبد الله، وتم تعيين رئيس الفريق البرلماني للأغلبية حينها النائب محمد عالي شريف رئيسا مؤقتا ومنسقا لأعمال الحزب الجديد.

وبلغ عدد البرلمانيين الذين أسسوا الحزب لدى انطلاقه 83 برلمانيا، من ضمنهم 42 نائبا، و41 شيخا، من أصل 151 برلمانيا هم أعضاء غرفتي البرلمان (النواب والشيوخ)، بالإضافة إلى عشرات السياسيين والوجهاء الاجتماعيين ورجال القبائل.

عقد الحزب جمعيته التأسيسية الأولى 05/05/2009 بقصر المؤتمرات في العاصمة الموريتانية نواكشوط بحضور الرئيس الحالي محمد ولد عبد العزيز الذي كان قد استقال قبل ذلك بنحو شهر من رئاسة الدولة تمهيدا لترشحه للانتخابات الرئاسية.

وتم انتخاب محمد ولد عبد العزيز رئيسا للحزب خلفا للنائب محمد عالي شريف، وهو ما أثار وقتها انتقادات من المعارضة التي اعتبرت رئاسته للحزب قبيل الانتخابات إشارة مفهومة لدى القبائل والعشائر إلى أن هذا هو حزب الدولة الذي عليها أن تصوت له وتقف إلى جانبه.

انتخابات 2009
دعم الحزب ترشيح محمد ولد عبد العزيز للانتخابات الرئاسية وساهم في حشد التأييد له انتخابيا في الانتخابات الرئاسية 2009.

ولم يلبث ولد عبد العزيز طويلا على رئاسة الحزب حيث أعلن استقالته منه في الثالث من أغسطس/ آب من نفس العام قبيل تنصيبه رئيسا للجمهورية بيومين، التزاما بمقتضيات الدستور الموريتاني الذي يمنع على رئيس الجمهورية الجمع بين الرئاسة وتولي مسؤولية قيادية في حزب سياسي.

وتم انتخاب الرئيس الحالي للحزب محمد محمود ولد محمد الأمين المقرب من قائد الجيش الجنرال محمد ولد الغزواني رئيسا للحزب خلفا لولد عبد العزيز، كما تم اختيار مكتب تنفيذي من 57 عضوا لقيادة الحزب في مرحلة ما بعد استقالة ولد عبد العزيز.

وبالإضافة إلى الانتخابات الرئاسية، شارك الحزب حتى الآن في استحقاق انتخابي واحد هو التجديد الجزئي لثمانية عشر دائرة انتخابية في انتخابات مجلس الشيوخ خلال شهر نوفمبر/ تشرين الثاني 2009، وحقق في تلك الانتخابات فوزا كاسحا بفوزه بغالبية المقاعد.

المؤتمر الأول
وبعد نحو 15 شهرا من تأسيس الحزب عقد مؤتمره الأول في09/07/2010، وسبق ذلك بإطلاق أول حملة انتساب في تاريخه قال قادة الحزب إنها أقنعت أكثر من 53% من الناخبين بالانضمام إليه.

تتهم المعارضة حزب الاتحاد من أجل الجمهورية باستغلال الأموال العامة ووسائل الدولة في تحقيق أهدافه السياسية، كما تتهم ولد عبد العزيز بالإشراف عليه وتولي رئاسته الفعلية بشكل غير معلن، وذلك بالرغم من أن الدستور الموريتاني يمنع على رئيس الدولة تولي مناصب قيادية في الأحزاب السياسية.

وعلى الرغم من أن حزب الاتحاد من أجل الجمهورية لا يزال هو الحزب الحاكم، والواجهة السياسية للسلطة القائمة، فإنه بدأ يعيش وضعا خاصا.

فالمعارضة تطالب بحله باعتباره أصبح حزبا للإدارة، والرئيس محمد ولد عبد العزيز لم يعد راضيا بما فيه الكفاية عن أدائه السياسي، وبدأ يشجع بعض الشباب على تأسيس حزب شبابي جديد أثار المخاوف لدى بعض قيادات الاتحاد من أن يشكل بديلا عن حزبهم على الأقل في المستويات الرسمية. Brief History of the Party:
Constitute the Union for the Republic in Mauritania at the hands of those who knew the deputies of no confidence who stood alongside the current President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz when he was commander of the presidential guard, and demanded the removal of former President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, he has been appointed Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the majority then MP High-Mohammed Sharif as interim president and coordinator of the work of the new party.

The party held the first constituent assembly 05/05/2009 at the Conference Palace in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, in the presence of the current President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who had resigned earlier, a month from the state presidency in preparation for his candidacy for the presidential elections.
