United Airlines for Android
My Samsung Galaxy S8 is "not supported" to play the in-flight entertainment, neither are any of my other Android devices. It isn't appropriate to claim to offer in-flight video if you don't have the ability to support the devices people use.
Does not recognize passports where middle name is listed on a separate line. Crashes when entering frequent flier number. Nice idea, couldn't use it in my case.
Waste of time downloading this for in-flight entertainment. Doesn't support android devices for that. Also app tells you to read a non-existent faq to get more info about not supporting your top of the line android device to play simple videos.
Absolutely horrible experience with inflight entertainment. Device compatibility page only says that some Andrioid 5.x and 6.x based devices are not supported. First, United is forsing you to buy onboard WiFi to dowload the app. Secondly, after you downloaded and installed this app you learned that Android 7 is not supported as well (Samsung S8, S8+ and Note8) The worst inflight user experience I've ever had Flight status shows On Time, although there is 1 hr delay, but uses has to click + sign to open the Details to find out that On Time on the main status screen is wrong. Incompetent development - United, can you hear this? Almost 50% of reviews are negative
117MB for an unsafe, mediocre, slow, feature-less and unstable app that spies on your phone seems a bit much, no? [Privacy Risk] It has access to almost every part of your phone by default such as Calendar, Camera, Contacts, Location, Phone and Storage. Disgraceful.
Updating my review! As of 12/27 we *still* have no support for entertainment for Oreo devices. This is past sad and is now upgraded to hilarious status! I'm a 1k going back to Delta...who supports all devices, including laptops. Bye, Felicia.
EDIT 12/14/17: My only complaint was the incompatibility with my phone as my review states. For now, that's fixed and I no longer have any issues. Very useful app. After reading the other reviews I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I used to love the app and Inflight entertainment. So much so that I remained a loyal United customer. I liked their strategic vision to completely remove headrest monitors in favor of BYOD. But it boggles my mind that you make this decision and don't support the major Android devices (or some of the major OS/browser combinations, but here's not the place to complain about that)...and haven't fixed it after a long period of time.
Doesn't support modern Android systems for movies on flight despite promising to do so in early 2017, leaving customers with major phones with no in-flight entertainment options. Lazy and incompetent management from United, who should fire their app developers.
This app is terrible, it crashes every time the entertainment starts. United needs to fix the app or provide alternate solutions on flights, this sub par app is unacceptable especially when you've already paid a fortune to take a united flight. I'll avoid flying united for long flights in the future!
Boring app. Keeps giving an error while trying to use it on my Samsung S7. Made for a horrible 9+ hour flight. One day maybe they'll read reviews and care about their customers.
Its ok for most things; checking flight status etc. However, when I try to check in, it asks me to scan my passport page. As soon as it takes the photo, my phone crashes and restarts. Useless for this purpose.
As other Android users are aware of, this app is hot garbage. Constant buffering and no actual video play made my flight a frustrating and boring one. APP UNINSTALLED.....
Poor app. Makes you enter your ticket or confirmation number in order to see simple info like departure time. The usual United junk.
I couldn't check in for my flight in the app. Nor could I view my boarding passes, and the flight status section never showed the updated delays. The entertainment section is downright useless, since it doesn't work on any modern version of Android. This app is bloated and useless. In short, what I've come to expect from United.
App doesn't support movie streaming on all but the most outdated and insecure versions of Android OS. Almost all Android phones purchased in the last 3 years are incompatible. United has been saying this will be resolved soon for years now. Wake up and treat your Android customers with respect.
Personal Device Entertainment does not support modern Android OS. Absolutely senseless that you can't use this service if you have an Android phone (OS 8.0 and later at time of writing)
Very disappointed that my android is not supported by this app for in flight entertainment. So many other airlines have better offerings to their customers.
Will not work with modern androids. Frustrating to not be able to use the in flight entertainment system. Will go back to JetBlue- much better entertainment!!
Way too many permissions and (despite the app page info) no way to disable any of them = instant uninstall
In August travelling movies could be watched on Android 6 tablet. Now since ANDROID 7 upgrade no more.movies. Hopefully United will do something about that. The ticketing part works just fine.
Would not work on pixel or pixel 2 running Android current 8.1. App compatibility talks about Android 4.3 and mentions 5 and 6. Keeping compatible with current secure os is standard good practice.
Not user friendly at all. You're better off doing everything on the computer. Don't waste your time checking in with it.
Why do over half of all phones not work with your app? Do you ever listen to your customers?
United's in-flight entertainment system is not compatible with the OS for Samsung S8. It is useless and makes for a long boring flight. Sad that United can't keep up with technology.
I have attempted to check in with this app every time I've traveled with this cut rate airline. Server error every single time. Desktop site is the same. Garbage for such a major airline.
Worked fine for boarding passes, but when I tried to use the in flight entertainment it said it doesn't support my phone, the Note 8 so I had to pay for Wi-Fi.
Inflight entertainment does not work on Android 7. Why is this so hard United. Figure it out.
This app is rubbish. Unless they can fix their issue about not being able to confirm the last step to validate my passport to check in, I won't change my rating. What is the point of this app if they say that it's not working and I need to go to the counter at the airport for assistance anyways?!
They forced me to buy internet on the flight so that I could get "free" entertainment on a transcontinental flight. There are no TVs on this flight. So, mildly annoyed, I bought internet and downloaded the app. Tried to watch the movies but guess what? They are not up to date and do not support Android 8.1. so now I wasted a bunch of money on 1 hour of internet. You suck, United. This is why everyone hates you, you greedy pigs.
This app is a hot smoking pile of dog $h1t. The Google Pixel is too new to support and Samsung tablet has the wrong Android version apparently. Neither version supports in-flight Entertainment. Come on United, get your programers to make patches for your app.
The developers of this app are deaf and blind idiots. They read no comments, make no fixes, and driove potential customers to other Airlines. United, you stink. This app does not work on Samsung S8 to book flights. It used to a month ago.. Now it just crashes. I just booked on American. United do not care about client's, their app or error logs. Joined the defection to AA.
This app sucks. Very poorly designed by an out-of-touch company. It caused me to lock my account 5 times, depsite being on the phone with customer service entering exactly what I was supposed to enter. Boo
Despite United's claims that in flight entertainment is supported on all mobile devices, it does not work on Android 8.1. It sends you to the unitedwifi website, which of course requires incompatible browser plugins.
as per previous review. why can't I watch entertainment on Samsung devices. same issue for about 2 years. boring flight since United does not offer global internet on 737 planes.
App doesn't understand screen rotation at all and does different things or doesn't display at all depending on rotation and screen at the time. User should be able to switch seats from flight status seat map after check-in and not have to go back into the reservation. Having issues on latest Verizon S8. Slow to pull up reservations and the trip I'm currently on will not show the boarding pass. It's stuck in checked in limbo.
Bullsh!t. I had to purchase WiFi on board to download the app, all to find out that it's not supported on the latest Samsung Galaxy S8... What kind of business runs an app that can't even be run on the latest hardware. All the people out there in your planes, who own new phones, purchase WiFi and find the same thing out must hate this service.
So now we are supposed to be able to access chase united lounge passes with the app. But they are not there!!!! Very very upset, sitting outside the lounge to which I have access but cannot go in
I have an Android phone with version 7.0 (so higher than 4.3 as required) and the latest version of the United app but I get an error message saying my phone is not supported. I have an LG but it also happened when I had a Samsung. Works perfectly for my kids who have iPhones.
I just wanted to check in. Apparently, typing your info in is not an option, your only option is to scan your passport. I didn't want to do it for privacy reasons, but I'm desparate so whatever. Alas, it doesn't work either - it successfully scans and shows me my correct info, but then fails on verifying document! Out of 50+ times I tried, exactly one worked (and I needed to scan multiple passports, so it didn't help me). Worst user experience ever, if you force me to use the scanner at least make sure it works.
by Q####:
Doesn't support inflight entertainment on 8.1 probably because redesigning the app to support media playback using the proper Android API would reduce UAL shareholder value. Also, needs granular permissions! Lastly, it's bloated. Why is it 123 MB?
