Cryptocurrencies are being mentioned more and more frequently in the media and the related technology is also becoming more commonplace in the financial sector. The virtual currency system is gradually moving into the mainstream.

A cryptocurrency is a virtual, also referred to as a digital, currency. It is a digital asset that acts as a medium of exchange of value. Cryptocurrencies act as alternatives to physical currency. As such, to overcome this design issue, Ethereum developed a decentralized virtual machine, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

The primary reason people use Ripple is that it allows users to complete cross currency transactions in between 3 to 5 seconds whilst maintaining users privacy. The system is set up specifically as a real-time gross settlement system (RTGS) with the focused purpose of being used as a currency exchange.

Litecoin is very similar to Bitcoin. However, Litecoin does offer users numerous technical advantages over Bitcoin. One of the key features is the Lightning Network which allows a larger number of transactions to be processed by the network per unit time. This has made the currency favorable for those looking for the least frictions and bottlenecks in processing.

Dash (previously named Darkcoin) is an open source peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that offers everything that Bitcoin offers with a number of additional features.
