Wharton had initially begun writing the novel in French, while she was studying in France, however as it became more in depth, it was changed and later published.

THEMES
Morality and societies limits on one's desires
The seemingly main theme throughout the story is the effect and limits society and morality limits the ability to achieve one's desire
The main character Ethan Frome is married to a women often described as unflattering and unattractive
He however falls for another woman which is understandable by the descriptions of his wife, however he struggles with his love as it is not moral to commit adultery, and obviously not accepted in society
Ethan's problems with not being able to escape his morals and societies scrutiny takes his own life

CHARACTER
Ethan Frome
Ethan is the protagonist of the novel, he has lived a troubled life.
Frome had attended college and had a promising life ahead, or so it seemed, however everything went downhill.

CHAPTER SUMMARY
The novel is told by an outsider in the first person form
The narrator was not present for the events of Ethan Frome’s story yet tells them anyways
The narrator and Frome became acquaintances while working together at a power plant, and that is how the story is learned
Frome is described as a very tall man who had been left lame by an accident occurring twenty-four years before the story is told
Frome face constantly displays a very harsh expression
The narrator became fascinated by Frome while working with him and wanted to learn his story
The story flashes back twenty years to a young and confidant Frome
Frome walks down the main street of town on a very cold evening
Frome thinks to himself about something he learned five years earlier while taking a technological course at a college in Worchester
Frome’s college experience was cut short however by his fathers death
Frome continues walking to a dance at a local church
Frome arrives at the dance to pick up Mattie silver
Mattie is the cousin of Ethan’s wife Zeena, and Frome seems to have developed affection for her
