The Register for Android
With more than 5 million readers, The Register is the one of the world's biggest online tech publications.
It has news desks in London, San Francisco and Sydney to make sure you get the news you need wherever and whenever it happens. And it has columnists who'll give you an interesting take on the implications.
It has an active community of IT Pros from across the world, who discuss everything from cloud to chips, systems design to sys admins, Virtualisation to Vatican bloggers, Latvian hackers to liquid crystal raygun turrets.
For an original slant on the world of technology, you could do worse.
The Register. It's where tech lives.
Well, it's an improvement over the last version (which wouldn't be difficult) in that you can now swipe left and right, and the comments load, but a) swiping is a bit flakey, and b) no option to get rid of the really distracting flashing ads. I'd pay for a non-ad version just to get rid of the bleeding things.
Not so much if you want to comment on them too. Finally able to actually view the comments after an update. New comment button does nothing. Reply to comments posts new instead of inline, tells me there was a problem posting, but pressing back tells me it was successful, and retries cause multiple postings. No means to edit or withdraw own comments, nor up/downvote other users comments. Can't find an in-app feedback option, and Title is a required field. Did anyone test this before release?
In the app store it does not show the adds which will ruin your 'user experience'. I do not have a problem with advertising but the MS add is too intrusive because it flashes constantly.
Takes ages to open, can't load any stream except top stories and when you click on a story it fails to load and then tells me to check my network connection! How do you think I'm posting this review? By pigeon? Copy the daily mail app, that's not perfect by any means but they listen to their readers and have a beta programme and listen to feedback. Total waste of time
UPDATE. From bad to worse. Will no longer sync articles on my nexus 4. Can't use it, don't want it. Uninstalling. Sorry El Reg. It's very convenient. Presentation is good but stability is poor. Doesn't like being restarted. HW:Google Nexus 4
Reinstalled this after app was revamped and it is better, but moving between pages is appalling. What's wrong with swiping? Having to jab the screen to find the page control is very annoying. Now (2015) it fails to sync on a perfectly good network.
A disappointing effort from one of the best IT news websites. Update: 28th November 2015. The app has stopped syncing headlines for the past couple of days: I have only been able to see the message "Unable to sync headlines - please check your network connectivity and try to sync again" regardless of whether WIFI or 3G is on. The app has always been hit and miss when loading comments but now even articles don't load at all... Uninstalled. Galaxy Note II, Android 4.4.2
For an IT Tech blog to not have a working app is laughable. Yes, I have tried turning it off and on again! HTC One (M8)
Only the listing of articles loads. Click on a article to load it up and you get nothing but a scrollable white page, no text. Useless app.
Power hog and buggy. A poor reflection on the 'the register'. Last update 3 years ago!
Stars syncing news and closes. Live the website, would love a working app too pretty please
Dedicated el reg fan, but this app is pooey. Takes ages to load, buttons cover text. Read four articles and it crashed. Like, how can you make a Web page that crashes. FAIL.
Usually able to read 1 possibly 2 stories if short before app becomes completely useless and no links work. Close, reopen to read another story. And repeat. Would have expected a lot better as the site has been a go to place for years. Please get this sorted, so much potential wasted. Update. Has been working well for a while on Z1 until last update. Now doesn't work at all, only shows headlines and then crashes. Removing now.
This app is made nearly unusable due to continual crashing and frequent failures to retrieve data despite my reliable wireless network (incorrectly stating 'No network'). Offline sync only works intermittently. As for 'no more errors reading comments'... False. No other apps I've used have these issues and The Reg doesn't seem to provide full RSS feeds so I can't even install a more reliable reader instead! Disappointing.
This is the one app that makes me want to throw my phone at the wall. Tried across other phones and tablets with same conclusion. Slow buggy and crashes constantly. The register is a great site for tech heads everywhere with an app written by an amatuer.
Opens and immediately says that it's unable to sync because it doesn't have a connection. This is seconds after downloading it (again) and opening it from the play store.
Considering the content written on El Reg, and the fact it is a tech news website I would have expected a quality application. Instead it's a clunky, buggy mess of an app written by amateurs!
I would love to be able to change my feed so that certian stories do not appear. I will change my rating when we can do this :) if we can already let me know how? Lol marc
Not as slick as the iOS version. It often fails to refresh content, complaining that there is no network connection (when there is). Particularly bad when not on 4G. Other than that - it's OK.
For a company that reports on technology, this is an appalling app. If this is at the cutting edge, then count me out, I'd rather read a newspaper.
Overall, not awful, but, the comments rarely load, with a message to check connection. How did I load the story without a connection? It's the commnetards reactions to stories that bring me back.
More articles than you would expect don't load at all and when they do it's very slow. If left open in the background will use 80%+ of battery - not usable other than an odd occasion!
I do wonder whether The Register have persisted with such a travesty of an app as some sort of experiment in extreme irony. If so, they're doing a good job. By far the worst news app I have used - loads the wrong article if you don't frequently refresh and the comments just flat out refuse to work and crash the app. Hopeless. Come on El Reg - you must be able to do better than this, surely?
- Slow to load - Can't read more than one / two articles - Hangs then crashes For a text only app? Ditch this and rebuild from the ground up... Galaxy S3 (Android 4.3)
When it works it is incredibly slow - and rarely manages to load comments. Recently it has started to display blank pages where articles should be too. It's far worse than useless - I can't believe El Reg have done nothing about this travesty of an app in over three years!
Love el reg but this app is crap no images in articles like another comment said but my main gripe with it though is that when I tap a headline it takes me to the wrong article
Reinstalled this after app was revamped and it is better, but moving between pages is appalling. What's wrong with swiping? Having to jab the screen to find the page control is very annoying
The latest update seems to be much better than before, it's now a usable alternative to the mobile website.
This app should be so much better given its content. It's very slow to load and deliver content which is a real shame as the content is good when it does load. ..
Glacial on quad core HTC One. Uninstalls quickly though!
Features to consider: a search bar and perhaps a slimmed-down version that shows just article subjects without image icons. Should speed up the loading process a bit.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy reading articles on The Register but this app leaves a lot to be desired. (1) It lags when you scroll (2) very often it doesn't load the article comments section (3)sometimes becomes unresponsive. I use it on an LG G3 so it's not like I'm using a dated phone. Come on, guys!
In spite of the raft of poor reviews, I've loaded the app on my old S2 skyrocket. Pleasantly surprised that, at least on first blush, the app works pretty well and the interface doesn't bite. It could be easier to find other topics, and there might be some way to create an experience similar to the hilarity of the front page of the web site. However, it seems to me this latest incarnation must be improved over what's been available previously. I'm not displeased to have this chewing up space on my device.
Very slow to load, both to start with and articles. Share button is right at the bottom of the article. Only about 15 articles load - can't see any more
Would give 5 stars if you it wasn't so slow. Even on a rapid fibre Wi-Fi it's very laggy.
On Nexus 7 this app is crap. Slow to start, slow to sync, some stories links appear to go no where, can't read user comments ever, app also just dies about 20% of the time. No Stars should be an option. Love the register, hate the app.
It's handy having the stories available in an app but the comments don't load work a network error warning on my galaxy s2. The comments are the best part of this site.
Hay guys. I read your site every day. Installed app before and was ok but now it dies when it starts syncing up. FIX IT!!!
Settings cog does nothing. Can only see latest headlines. Is that it? (galaxy s3) the add covers the home button and the other bits at the bottom and makes me feel I'm going to have a fit with it flashing away. Also left & right buttons don't work, they disappear!

Doesn't work very well (freezes a lot android lollipop) The content layout is different, the top stories are set to a specific amount and doesn't "add more". still not worth installing
