Linux Journal for Android
I like it!
I purchased this app expecting to read a magazine offline while on an airplane. After a few pages every page is blank - sucks. I expected it to download the whole file not a piece of it.
I do miss my paper edition but as an international subscriber i do appreciate the price and flexibility provided with this app. I really like flipping between the 'print' view and the pure text view. Like others I would like the app to remember where I had read to on reopening . Also would like release notes. The app just upgraded to v3 and i have no idea what changed.
Not only do I no longer get the print copies I paid for but now I can no longer access the electronic editions remaining in my subscription which expires with the May 2012 edition. Be warned, they take your money and run. And yes I called and they told me to contact "Android" whoever that is!
I've had this app for several months now, and every time the new issue comes out, it said I'm not subscribed to view this issue, it happenes EVERY MONTH.
Nice for reading on the go, but I would like to see what has changed with the new update.
Please update the app. Laggy and slow. Does not look great on tablets.
Like it. But it need to save the issues onto the device for later reading.
Nice
i really like the idea this app works - the ability to switch between the magazine and text view is brilliant. however this app has a problem with tablets ( or at least with my motorola xoom ). if crashes rather often if i change between landscape and portrait. however my major problem is that to flip a page you have to drag the whole current page from the right side to the complete left side. while this might work on phones where the screen is rather small this is a really bad experience on a tablet. i used other readers where i was able to swype a page just from anyware on the screen with a little swype to the left. however here i have to swype from the complete right to the complete left to flip a page. this really needs a fix. beside that i really like the idea of reading this on my tablet, however i´ve prefered the printed version.
I was apprehensive (but open) to this change to digital-only, but this app won me over. It even worked offline, which I did not expect. Great work with this. My only request would be for a light-on-dark text viewing option, or maybe a little configuration on that end in general. Still, even without that, I am won over.
Couldn't be more happy. This App makes it easy to read my favorite magazine. Very good navigation, quick downloads and response time. Very solid.
Generally very easy and predictable to use but a down/up move often takes you to next or previous page, partic. when you get more than halfway down.
Once you get past the initial update and "force log off " it seems to work fine. Not sure why this is doing that initially, but everything has issues starting out. All and All a fairly good application after the first frustration.
I think me changing my subscription email address to lowercase on lj's website helped.
The text view is great. It needs to remember the last page read. I get tired of trying to remember where I left off every time I open an issue.
log in or subscription issue again.. cannot log in with my email.. it keeps saying "update your info" but found no way to update my subscription info.. please fix it soon as possible.
Seems to work fine, but cannot be installed on SD Card memory. This app will be one of the first to be deleted if I run low on internal memory.
Keeps fc'ing.... bionic..... + Miss my "toilet" time with the paper edition, not to be disgusting.
Feel like being cheated, cannot login the apps, keeping said there is no account info in their record, crap if not fix it quick. get CS but no help.
Having the same issue as Deadguy below, re: entering my email, tells me not found, I click Update, get a "Force close". Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Have been to the LJ site to ensure (per the email they sent) to ensure that the Enhanced Digital Edition (Texterity) has been selected. I get the edition via email, can download in browser fine, all's good except with app. Looking forward to this being addressed.
Excellent app. Excellent magazine! Closest thing I've found to reading a physical publication so far.
Text not clear in pdf mode. Article view is grey. Dont show anything in the portrait
The app is great. But I can not login with my email. It complains not finding my account. But I can login from a web browser. On android 2.2
Subscription issues!!! Says my email address is not known! I paid for this.... please fix it!
Simple and useful.
**final review** seems LJ has the login issue sorted and it now works great! about as close as you'll get to reading an actual copy of the magazine! (now that they went digital only) I love it!
How do I download past issues?
Perfect for my use!
Correction: In text mode only.... On the Samsung Galaxy note there is 1 inch of white space on either side of the columns making it unreadable... reflow the text and this app would get a 5. There should only be about 1 character margin not an inch. After more use, this problem doesn't occur in landscape mode, and portrait mode sometimes works if you use magazine mode, let the whole thing load, and then use text mode. The page navigation area/ buttons are far too big and consume too much real estate..
As stated , works great and I don't have a stack of dead trees sitting around collecting dust.
I tried this app out, and at first it seemed nice. I went out of my way to download every issue available onto my tablet, which has plenty of free space on it. I could read the issues fine for less than a day, but then the app had to go online to fetch them again. After several cycles of this, I just gave up and manually downloaded the EPUB editions, My wifi-only tablet is not always connected to the network and I do not want it to be. With manually downloaded EPUB files, I don't have to worry about the files mysteriously disappearing. Due to the fact that every time I tried to use the app, the cache would eventually (within a day or two) forget every issue I downloaded, I found this app unusable.
Extremely annoying app. It crashes on trying to read special editions. It won't connect over Bluetooth network. Lots of other problems.
Seems to drop cached content frequently despite many GB of free storage on device. Very frustrating when an hour away from the next wifi hotspot being asked to authenticate again and unable to access content!!! Never had that problem with the print version! When connected or cache is current, decently good. Wish I could zoom in more when checking a graphic like a chart or code listing. The reflowed text alternative is nice to avoid having to 'pan and scan' the 'camera-ready' version.
Generally speaking, this is a great app. The fact that I can read any issue on my Nexus 7 is brilliant. I like the linking from the cover and comments page to the articles. Unfortunately, I've been unable to get the menu icons to work. When I open the menu, the icons are displayed across the top. Touching one simply closed the menu instead of performing the action. I had to open the running app browser to close Linux Journal and then re-open it to get back to the list of issues.
I've had a chance to try it out and am not interested in this sham of Journal. I admire them for going paperless but cant help but think this stuff is still in its infancy and you should have provided a choice. Even a free issue makes no difference; if you can't read the bloody thing what is the point? Can I give it a no star rating? ...Guess not, ok
Does not work well on nexus 7
Great content in a poor wrapping. The app doesn't store downloaded data, needs to authenticate each time it is launched, can't be set in text mode before page 5 or 6 of each issue (cheers for the forced ads), definitely not done with a mobile phone in mind. Dear LJ team, it's been over a year you went digital, I've been patient but am considering resiliation because of such poor interface.
Doesn't remember login, downloads same issue each time its opened. Doesn't remember page. Please fix.

Miss the paper but, aside from the blinding experience of trying to read the formatted layout on a cell phone screen, this is almost as good.
